Artist description
The Harmonic Hatchery Band specializes in jazz for children (whatever the word "children" means). The band does concerts, jazz improvisation workshops and residencies, special occasion shows and large-scale events involving dancers, mimes, circus performers, taiko drummers, etc. all over North America and Japan (Engagements are done in English or Japanese or both).
One of the Harmonic Hatchery Band's ongoing objectives is the use of music to cultivate intercultural exchange and harmony between North America and Japan. In this light, the band engages in projects such as using multi-track recording to facilitate song-writing collaboration between kids in North America and kids in Japan, as well as intercultural musical workshops in North American and Japanese school systems.
Although the Harmonic Hatchery Band has recorded arrangements of countless well-known children's songs as it goes about its good-times intercultural business, the band's first all-original CD, "Leave It All To The Music" has been a bit overdue. It's here now, though, and fans on both sides of the Pacific are calling it well worth the wait. The genres involved in this particular work are, by and large, more on the North American side of the spectrum. The record is a tastefully peculiar smorgasbord of jazz and jazz/funk music with humorous English lyrics and real nice singing (by Gail Heavilin and Sue Klassen). All music and lyrics (except for the tune, "Inside", whose lyrics were written by Gail) were written and arranged by jazz pianist Ron Hadley.
And, guess what...we really don't seem to know what the word "children" means, because people are already saying that this CD is not just for children......hmmm. |
