Susan D. Laws
rules to live by
Love story: Discussing the impact of love as a muse means digging up one of the oldest driving forces of inspiration for singer-songwriters everywhere. Finding solace about lost love through song has in many ways almost become a tired musical cliché. But to talk about how 21-year-old Susan D. Laws writes and sings about that mysterious cosmic force is like falling in love all over again. Her voice has been described as Jewel-like, and while that may be a fair comparison, it falls short. Her unique vocal range and sound are what truly set this young singer apart. Raised in Oxnard in a family environment that embraced music, Laws developed a passion for song at a very early age, yet she was held back by a crippling shyness that kept her talents hidden until she reached high school. A performance at a pep rally would be the turning point at which Laws truly found her voice.
Talent search: After receiving positive feedback from her peers, Laws has been performing on the open mic circuit throughout Northern and Southern California for the past three years, appearing at places like Ventura’s Garden Village Café. Most recently, Laws has taken her music to the open mics at the Hard Rock Café in Hollywood. She even tested her talent on the Fox TV network show American Idol, camping out the night before to secure her spot in line. While she made it past only the first cut, Laws still found the tryouts rewarding. “It’s very humbling to know there are so many others out there doing the same thing,” she said. “It’s always good to go through that kind of experience.” And what did Laws have to say about Idol’s most infamous judge? “ I didn’t get to meet [Simon Cowell]… but he says what people think; others are just afraid to say it. I kind of respect him for that.”
Saving grace: Laws may not fit the dirty pop princess persona of Idol’s most popular protégées; it’s her charming innocence she captures so well that makes her music captivating. When Laws writes, she draws from personal experience, making her music a catharsis for both herself and her listeners. “I just want to keep making music so others can listen and kind of find comfort through it.” Let’s hope she does.
