Artist description
Captain Overreact is a noteworthy addition to the
eclectic Lawrence/Kansas City music scene,
offering its unique brand of synth-pop/rock. With
members hailing from Johnson County and Wichita, Kansas and
Seattle, Washington, George Freitag, Zach Land,
Rick Murphy, and Theron Hawley use their various
musical backgrounds and influences to create
simple and catchy yet technically sound songs.
Captain Overreact achieves its prevalent sound
through combining synth-driven hooks reminiscent
of Komeda, Self, and the Cars, with the guitar
driven energy of Weezer, Spacehog, and the Pixies,
topping it off with showmanship akin to Poison,
Smashing Pumpkins, and Ben Folds Five.
The band was formed in 2001 and is currently
performing live throughout the local music scene. |

Press Reviews
"Do yourself a favor; the next time you hear about a Captain Overreact show, clear your schedule, call your friends, and get yourself there. You won't be disappointed. Just imagine a band that combines the brisk vocals from the Descendents, the wackiness of Danger Bob, the synthetic sounds and lyrical genius of Reggie and the Full Effect, and the fun and energy of any pop-punk band. It's hard to describe the sound specifically, but the band has labeled itself as "Efficient Rock".
Captain Overreact have recently put out their first recording, an EP entitled "2 X Faster". The EP includes six of their best songs to date, starting off with a swanky song about a girl who loves attention and free drinks, "She Drinky". This first song really introduces the listener to what Captain Overreact is all about: poppy synth-rock that pours out a good time to everyone. The stand-out song on the disc seems to be "Don't Tell Me Never", a fast-paced rocker, laced with hooks and silly threats to an old lover.
The backbone of most of their songs is the catchy synth/keyboard sounds of Theron Hawley, which provide a groovy mix to the rock & roll platform. George Freitag, the charismatic front man, creates a sense of urgency in his voice which makes the songs fun to sing along and rock out to. Add in the catchy guitar riffs via Zack Land and the talented drum skills of Rick Murphy and you've got yourself a winner. Captain Overreact quickly became one of our own personal favorite local bands because of their unique sound and fun live shows.
Overall, this EP is proof that Captain Overreact has a place here in the great music scene that we all share. It's a remarkable achievement for them and the only thing disappointing about it is that it's a mere six songs long." By: Rodney Skaggs & Hailey Metzger; Taken from lawrencerock.com, 7/8/03 |
