Artist description
formed as a diatribe against chill out music, thee pirates strike a new path in this time of retro revisionism and chill out meanderings. they ruled out shite and settled on good and stayed that way, producing bright and bold songs that are thought provoking, tuneful, angry, witty and not afraid of the major chord. a rarity these days. as dissonance says, its the revolution you can dance to!(see http://www.amoebic.co.uk for the saigon press release) |

Artist History
formed in late 2001, as a two piece, fishboy and j. erm recorded a few scrappy demos of pirates songs, before recruiting the services of bass player dissonance, and the additional keyboard skills of one G.Peel, greenock (who has since left the group to comcentrate on his own band, the flying matchstick men, watch this space).
we proceeded to record an e.p's worth of songs based on these early demos with the help of Matt Forbes and his bedroom studio. we then recorded our single, 'Pirate Radio / Tha Lick' to be released in early summer (see events for details!) on amoebic productions. We have now completed our second e.p, 'plural(s)' which will be released shortly after the single and are currently rehearsing for upcoming gigs throughout scotland. keep eyes on amoebic.co.uk for details! |

///////stuart finnie: Saigon High Chair Pirates w/ Graham's band and headliners
i sat out 3/8/02 Birnam institute./////
First came Graham Peel's band who were deceptively jokey. I say deceptively because they were actually really good despite the surrealist ramblings spewed forth by the pink shirted poove. The songwriting ability was formidable and the range of styles was...impressive. Then he got drunk and the high chair pirates went on. Now depending on who you talk to, thee pirates are "OK" on record and "great" live, or "great" on record and "OK" live. Personally I think they are a great band whose songs definitely suit live performance. Although the distance between the two vocalists led to a little bit of unintentional dissonance, their punky sound and live enthusiasm let them get away with it. The rhythm section CD got fucked at the beginning, but by the time the band got to "(im)pulse" and "laptop riots" the band had found momentum and were pretty unstoppable until the end of their set. The quiet one which i forget the name of also worked well live, even though no-one else agrees with me. The overall set gave the impression of an enthusiastic band giving it their all to become a great live act. Which is convenient really because that's what they are. I had a cool time anyway and was contented enough to just miss the headliners, who from what i heard through the doors, had one good song that had a funky bassline.

the Afghanis tie on tank helmets, and indulge in a game of goat-grabbing, a
3-day sport with no rules, involving the carcass of a calf and up to 200 mad
sweaty men. in Highland Perthshire, the locals perform a slightly more tame
sport of chasing round the countryside trying to find an obscure village
hall (that's nowhere near the village) in order to listen to an even more
obscure band. all in the name of fun. thank god the saigon high chair
pirates' debut gig carried as much energy as a kraken on PMT in Pearl
Harbor. Otherwise we'd have had to crack open the meat locker and start
running.////
minor technical hitches aside, the performance exceeded the quality of the
CD (pirate radio) that most of the show was taken from, no mean feat for a
home-grown beer and bellybutton fluff-fuelled trio. I'd keep an eye on this
lot in future, when they're hitting 150 while still on their provisional.//// |
