Alienated.org:
In the recent past the music world has experienced somewhat of a cross-pollination of genres. Since the introduction of "Alternative Music" in the early 90's, musicians have felt the need to experiment and splice together such genre's as Rap/Rock, Techno/Metal, and Punk/New Wave. It is a blessed day when a person can turn on a mainstream radio station and get a dose of pure, in your face, Rock 'N Roll.
Once again we find ourselves in a small gulf town in Texas. There we meet a group of friends attempting to resuscitate a sound thought to have faded with the likes of the Black Crowes. Jason Touchette, Bryan Jones, Paul Soroski, and Brian Hays deliver a punchy sound with the never failing ensemble of chilling vocals, masterful guitar riffs, and a bone shattering rhythm section.
Their latest release, a self titled album, "creeped" it's way into my mailbox late last week, and has since settled into it's new home in my cd changer (a coveted spot where every cd in my collection longs to live). Ironically, the new disc replaced the spot that "Throwing Bones" (Podunk's 1998 offering) previously occupied.
The album begins with the rockin' tune suitably titled: "The Creeper". The track does just that. Creeps into your head, finds a comfortable niche, and sticks there.
Up next we have "Closer to Free" which really shows off the power and emotion Jason and the guys can belt out turning an otherwise average song into an instant hit.
I originally heard "Killing Day" as a preview on their website. It left my ears begging for more and sent me off waiting (impatiently) for the guys to release it.
"Smile" is another track that shows just how deep the "Rock" roots of Podunk go. The inspiring lyrics show off just how fun singing along really is. In no time, you'll be singing, smiling and "stretching your arms real wide".
"Mockingbird" is the third song I heard before getting the release. It is probably tied with "Killing Day" for the rank of "favorite track" in my book (on this disc of course). The blatent truth to this song is a wakeup call. It shows that no matter how far your go or how many times you change your tune, you'll always be the same, You.
I've been a Podunk fan for years, having been in a band that covered their music and even opened for them once to just enjoying the pure energy their music provides. They put on an amazing live performance that I suggest everyone get a taste of. It will leave you screaming for more, and before you know it, you'll be driving down the road trying to match that amazing pitch Jason belts out with every heart-felt lyric he sings.
Overall I give this disc a 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is a disc that will occupy the "coveted" spot for years to come (unless they release a new one sooner).
