1965-FORT HAYES ARMY BASE BAND.
I HAD JUST TURNED 14 & THIS WAS MY 1ST. BAND. WE DID A LOT OF EARLY 60S MOTOWN SOUL & ENGLISH POP COVERS. FRIDAY NIGHTS SAW US PLAY THE US ARMY BASE IN COLUMBUS OHIO ALONG WITH A FEW PRIVATE PARTIES IN LIMA OHIO. THE BAND INCLUDE JERRY MALZER ON GUITAR, JIM HARBARGER GUITAR, DENNIS CRAIG GUITAR, TIM KERRWOOD ON DRUMS AND JOHNNY PAPA ON VOCALS. AT MY FIRST SHOW I GOT SO DRUNK I WAS LEG LESS AND COULD HARDLY HOLD ONTO MY BASS. WHOOPEE!
1966-1967 FORT HAYES ARMY BASE BAND II.
ABOUT THIS TIME JERRY & JOHNNY GOT THEIR GIRLFRIENDS PREGNANT. THEY HAD TO QUIT AND GET DAY JOBS. BACK THEN RUBBERS WERE IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND AND IF YOU DID SCORE SOME THEY WOULD MOST LIKELY LEAK. A LOT OF SOLDIERS WERE RETURNING FROM HAMBURG GERMANY AND SOME HAD SEEN THE BEATLES BACK 1961. NOBODY KNEW SHIT ABOUT DRUGS EXCEPT THESE RETURNING SOLDIERS WHO KEPT TURNING US ON TO HASH & SPEED, WHICH THEY BROUGHT BACK, FROM EUROPE. THEIR REPLACEMENTS WERE JIM JENKINS ON GUITAR AND DAN WHITE ON VOCALS. WE HAD KNOWN EACH OTHER FROM 5TH GRADE & HAD HUNG AROUND LISTENING TO RECORDS WHEN THE BRITISH INVASION BEGAN TO EXPLODE. BY LATE 1966 WE WERE INTO DRUGS, BABES & BOOZE BIG TIME COURTESY OF US ARMY! AMERICA, I LOVE THIS COUNTRY! HARBARGER NEVER LIKED WHITE & JENKINS MUCH, I GUESS IT WAS BECAUSE WE HAD TURNED HIS BEST FRIEND KERRWOOD ON TO LSD 25! ANYWAY, ALONG WITH MUCH BETTER BANDS LIKE THE REBOUNDS AND KINGS ENGLISH WE STARTED TO PLAY THIS DANCE HALL ON THE EAST SIDE OF COWTOWN CALLED THE UPPER DECK. WE WHERE QUITE A SNAPPY LOT WITH OUR PSYCHEDELIC THREADS AND BLACK LIGHT SHOW. WE ALSO BEGAN TO PLAY THE 18TH & MAIN ROLLER RINK. IN THE 60S AMERICAN BLACKS WERE TREATED LIKE DOG SHIT AND MOST COPPED AN ATTITUDE AT WHITES. WE GOT OUR ASS KICKED A FEW TIMES BUT MOST OF THE TIME THINGS WERE COOL. DURING THIS TIME FOR A LARK WE WOULD SET UP IN THE BACKYARD OF THIS COAL MINER CALLED DRUNKEN ERNE AND RUN THROUGH OUR SHOW. SURE ENOUGH THE KIDS WOULD SWELL OUT INTO THE STREET AND THE PIGS WOULD COME AND CLOSE IT DOWN. ONE-DAY HARBARGERS DAD FOUND OUT ABOUT OUR DRUG ABUSE AND FORCED HIM & KERRWOOD TO QUIT.
1968-1970 THE ELDERBERRY BLOSSOM TEA BAND.
TO REPLACE HARBARGER & KERRWOOD WE CALL UPON DAN MAHONEY FOR VOCALS, AND MIKE RAYAN FOR DRUMS. MAHONEY, LIKE MYSELF, HAD ATTENDED CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND WAS ABOUT AS STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW, EXCEPT FOR ONE FLAW, HE WAS IRISH, HENCE HE LOVED TO DRINK KESSLERS WHISKEY, AND THIS ENDEARED HIM TO US! HIS MOM TRIED TO BECOME A NUN BUT I GUESS SHE COULDNT HACK IT. ANYWAY, ONCE HE GOT A WHIFF OF HIPPIE CHICKS & FREE LOVE OLD DANNY BOY TOOK TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE LIKE A FISH TO FUCKIN WATER! RAYAN WAS FROM GROVE CITY OHIO AND HIS DAD WOULD DRIVE HIM INTO TOWN 3 TIMES A WEEK TO PRACTICE OR RECORD WITH US IN MAHONEY ATTIC. IN 1968 THERE WERE TWO TYPES OF TEENAGERS; FREAKS WHO TOOK ANY DRUGS THEY COULD GET THEIR GRUBBY HANDS ON, AND SQUARES WHO DIDNT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. RAYAN WAS A SQUARE BUT MAHONEY HAD TURNED FREAK. I REMEMBER PLAYING THE OHIO STATE FAIR 2 YEARS IN A ROW ON THIS MOVING STAGE PULLED BY A TRACTOR. IT WAS WEIRD, THE KIDS WOULD FOLLOW US FROM ONE SPOT TO THE NEXT WHILE WE BANGED OUT SONGS. OUR AMPS KEPT FALLING OVER EVERY TIME WE MADE A TURN. ANOTHER TIME WE WERE BACK AT THE ROLLER RING PLAYING TO A PACKED HOUSE. WE WERE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF FIRE BY HENDRIX WHEN BOOM, MY AMP CATCHES FIRE. SOON 3 OR 4 FIRE TRUCK SHOWS UP AND THE STAGE IS ON FIRE. SUDDENLY SOMEONE IS YELLING EVERYBODY OUT! THE FIRE GET EXTINGUISHES AND THE OWNER THROWS US OUT WITH ONLY HALF OUR PAY. BACK AT THE VAN RAYANS DAD SAYS THAT ROCK N ROLL IS TOO DANGEROUS & RAYAN QUITS. LATER ON KERRWOOD CALLS AND SAYS THAT HE JUST GOT A NEW G E STEREO TAPE RECORDER SO DAN, JIM & I TALK KERRWOOD BACK INTO THE BAND. WE SIT DOWN AND WRITE THIS SPOOF OF ABOUT 12 SONGS WHICH WE ENDED UP RECORDING LIVE BECAUSE BACK THEN REEL TO REELS DIDNT HAVE OVERDUB. THE CONCEPT REVOLVED AROUND THIS PROSTITUTE CALLED MOLLYANN AND HER BAND OF MISFITS. IT WAS A HILARIOUS PORN-ROCK CONCEPT WHICH WE PARODIED OFF FRANK ZAPPAS WERE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY, WHO IN TURN HE RIPPED OFF THE BEATLES SERGEANT PEPPERS. BY THIS TIME ALL OF US WAS DOING LSD ON A DAILY BASIS. IT WAS A WONDER THAT ANYTHING GOT DONE. I THINK WE WORKED ON 1/4 INCH REEL FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS. THEN MAHONEY FLIPS-OUTS ON ACID & HIS MOM MAKES HIM QUIT. LATER, WHEN I TURNED 17 I WAS DATING THIS 18-YEAR-OLD AND GOT HER KNOCKED UP. THERE IS NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS FOLKS!
1971 SEGFRE OWL
AFTER ABOUT 2 MONTHS OF HEAVENLY BLISS MY SWEETHEART FILES FOR DIVORCE SO I FORM A BAND PATTERNED AFTER THE CREAM WITH STICK HOFFMAN ON BASS & TIM KERRWOOD ON DRUMS. THERE WERE RECORDINGS OF THIS BAND BUT TIM DIED FROM A BRAIN CLOT AND THE FAMILY MOVED OUT OF STATE.
1972 GAR
THIS WAS ANOTHER BLUES BAND THING. THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE IN AND OUT OF THE BAND I LOST TRACK OF THE WHO, WHAT & WHEN OF IT. WE USE TO DO A LOT OUTSIDE SHOW AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY OVAL, MIRROR LAKE & STUDENT TOWER. RUMOR HAD IT THAT A LOCAL BLUES GUITARIST NAME DAVE WORKMAN MADE SOME RECORDINGS. ALSO I REMEMBER DOING SOME SHOWS FOR WCOL RADIO STATION BUT IM NOT SURE ABOUT THINGS? THE BAND HAD RENTED A HOUSE ON EAST BLAKE AVE. IN COLUMBUS OHIO AND A LOT OF PARTYING WHEN DOWN UNTIL WE GOT BUSTED AND THE BAND BROKE UP.
1973 GREYSHIP
THIS WAS A GLITTER-ROCK BAND PATTERNED AFTER ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS WITH TOM ROHRER ON DRUMS/ LYNN HAIRSTON VOCALS, AND JOHN STEVENS ON BASS. WE RENTED A HOUSE IN DOWNTOWN WESTERVILLE OHIO & MOST OF OUR SHOWS WERE AROUND THE STATE OPENING UP FOR BANDS LIKE RUSH, TED NUGENT & THE OHIO PLAYERS. IN FACT AT ONE SHOW TED THREW ME OUT OF HIS BUS FOR SMOKING POT. THERE ARE SOME TAPES OF LIVE SHOWS FROM MR. BROWNS DESCENT WHICH THE BASS PLAYER HAS. IVE NEVER HEARD ANY OF THEM.
1974 ZAP
I GOT KICKED OUT OF GREYSHIP AND WAS ASKED TO JOIN THESE GUYS. I HAVE RECORDINGS AND WE SOUNDED A LOT LIKE THE WHO. MUSIC WAS GETTING PRETTY BORING IN COLUMBUS AROUND THIS TIME. ONE NIGHT ME & THE BOYS GO SEE THE NEW YORK DOLLS AT VETERANS. THERE WERE JUST 4 OF US IN THE WHOLE AUDITORIUM, BUT WOW, THE DOLLS WENT AHEAD & KICKED THE SHIT OUT OF IT! JOHNNY KILLER THUNDERS BLEW ME AWAY THAT NIGHT. EVERYTHING CHANGED FOR ME AFTER THAT.

AFTER GETTING KICKED OUT OF ZAP I GOT MARRIED A 2ND TIME AND JOIN THIS COVER BAND FOR THE MONEY.

THIS WAS ANOTHER COVER BAND.
1978 THE TRUE BELIEVERS
THIS WAS MY FIRST REAL BAND IN THAT EVERYTHING WE DID WAS ORIGINAL- WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW COVERS. AT THE TIME THERE WERENT ANY PLACE THAT WOULD TAKE PUNKS ON, SO MIKE REP JUST SORTA MADE PLACES FOR US TO PLAY. I REMEMBER THE SCREAMING URGE AND US BOTH PLAYING CHUCK KUBAT RECORD STORE AND MAYBE ONE OR TWO PEOPLE SHOWING UP. THINGS DIDNT START TO CHANGE UNTIL MTV (AUGUST 1981) THEN THE WHOLE LOCAL SCENE JUST EXPLODED WITH CLUBS & PRESS COVERAGE. THE EARLY DAYS WERE VERY FRUSTRATING & MY WIFE MADE ME QUIT A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT REP & JAY WERE DRUGGIES & ALWAYS TOOK ME BACK. WHEN I JOINED THE BAND IT WAS THE GEN. ROBT. E. LEE ON BASS/VOCALS, TOMMY JAY VOCALS/GUITAR/KEYBOARDS/DRUMS, & MIKE REP VOCALS/GUITAR/BASS/DRUMS/KEYBOARDS. LATER ON CARLA LUST JOINED ON VOCALS/KEYBOARDS; ALONG WITH TED LUST ON HARP/BASS/GUITARS/DRUMS. NEXT THING I KNEW OLD JOHNNY FURNACE WAS ON LEAD & THE DRUG KING HIMSELF FREIGHT TRAIN WAS ON HARP/GUITAR/VOCALS. TOMMY JAY & I HAD MET ON THIS GOVERNMENT JOB AND THE NEXT THING I KNEW ALL OF THEM WERE CRANKING OUT TUNES. EVERYBODY WAS WRITING KILLER SHIT! HOWEVER MY MARRIAGE WAS FALLING APART AND THE GENERAL WAS MOVING OUT OF STATE SO REP QUIT AND FOR THE TIME BEING THE PARTY WAS OVER. MIKE WHEN ON TO PLAY IN GREAT PLAINS/THE MOUND WALKERS/ THE CAMPFIRE WALKERS/SKULL BANK WHILE PRODUCING GUIDE BY VOICES, THE STRAPPING FIELD HANDS, THE YIPS AND MANY OTHERS. BUT HIS BEST WORK CAME WITH MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS. TOMMY ALSO HAS DONE A SHIT LOAD OF SOLO PROJECTS WITH THE GIBSONS BROTHERS, THE BASSHOLES, JIM SHEPARD & GREAT PLAINS. IN FACT, THEY DID MY 1ST RECORD WEDDING VOWS IN 1982. OVER THE YEARS, WE STILL GET TOGETHER TO DO GIGS & RECORD WITH OTHER MUSICIANS. I GUESS THE BAND WONT REALLY END UNTIL WERE ALL DEAD?
1985-1986 KEVYN & THE KASUALTIES
AFTER CUTTING SQUID SONGS & NASHVILLE IN NASHVILLE ALBUMS IN NASHVILLE TENNESSEE I RETURNED TO COWTOWN AND LINKED UP WITH RUDEBOY CRASH N BURN SMITH ON DRUMS & KEVYN KASUALTY ON VOCALS/GUITAR. IT WAS A HARD-CORE HOOT BASED IN THE THE FORT WHICH WAS A DUPLEX THAT HOUSED THE KASUALTIES, GREAT PLAINS & DARK ARTS. SOMETIMES OUT OF TOWN BANDS LIKE BLACK FLAG WOULD CRASH THERE AFTER A GIG. SOMETHING WAS ALWAYS HAPPENING AND I SPEND MANY A NIGHT PASSED OUT ON THE FLOOR AT THE FORT. ONE DAY I WAS AT CHUCK KUBATS RECORD STORE & BUMPED INTO RUDEBOY WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE KASUALTIES NEEDED A BASS PLAYER. SOON I FOUND MYSELF SPINNING FROM THE BLITZKRIEG OF UNENDING GIGS, WHICH PUSHED THE ENVELOPE OF MY MUSICAL ABILITY. KEVYN WAS A GREAT SONGWRITER WHO REFUSED TO COMPROMISE HIS APPROACH TO ART. WE RELEASED A RECORD CALLED PUNK? POP? ABOUT 30-40 OUTTAKES FROM THE PROJECT
HAVE NEVER BEEN RELEASE AND GARY REEVES HAS THE MASTERS TAPES. ALSO, AROUND THIS TIME I BEGAN TO RELEASE SOLO PROJECTS ON CASSETTE OF OTHER WRITERS. ONE OF WHICH IS THE ARLUS STITCH PROJECT CALLED I WANT BE YOU. (ARLUS DIED IN 1994) AFTER 2 YEARS I BECAME VERY COMFORTABLE & FRUSTRATED WITH KEVYN, SO WHEN JIM SHEPARD ASKED ME & RUDEBOY TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE KASUALTIES & V-3, WE WENT FOR THE CHALLENGE OF BEING FRONTING CO-WRITERS WITH V-3. KEVYN OUR
FEARLESS LEADER DIED IN 1997; NEVER GAINING THE MUSICAL RESPECT HE SO RICHLY DESERVES! KEVYN & ARLUS DEATHS ARE STILL A GREAT PERSONAL LOST FOR ME.
1986-1998 V-3
I HAD MET JIM SHEPARD BACK IN 1978 AT THE 1ST. NOWHERE SHOW SPONSORED BY MIKE ROCK OF THE SCREAMING URGE. I THINK REP INTRODUCED US, BUT JIMBO SAYS THAT IN 1977 WE TALKED ON THE PHONE ABOUT HOME RECORDING APPROACHES. WHEN ME & JIMBO FORMED V-3 IT WAS ROXANNE NEWMAN ON VOCALS AND LATER GUITAR, RUDEBOY DRUMS, JIM VOCALS/GUITAR, AND ME ON BASS/KEYS. WE PUT OUT A TAPE CALLED UNBROKEN SILENCE IN 1989, FOLLOWED BY A CD CALLED PSYCHIC DANCE HALL IN 1992. A FEW EPS FOLLOWED THESE. THIS LINEUP LASTED FOR 7 YEARS THEN ROXANNE GOT KICKED OUT IN 1993 AND WE PLAYED CBGBS TO PROMOTE OUR NEGOTIATE NOTHING CD. IN LATE 1993 JIMBO AND I HAD AN EGO DISAGREEMENT AND I QUIT. BY FEBRUARY OF 1995 WE HAD WORKED OUT OUR PROBLEMS AND V-3 SIGNED WITH RICK RUBINS AMERICA RECORDS. WE RELEASED THE PHOTOGRAPH BURNS CD IN 1996 FOLLOWED BY A WEST COAST TOUR WITH GUIDED BY VOICES AND SPOON. THE NEW V-3 WAS SAM BROWN ON DRUMS, LELAND CAIN BASS AND JIMBO ON VOCALS/GUITAR. I STAYED ON IN MANAGEMENT WORKING WITH JIMBO ON DAY TO DAY OPERATIONS.
STUDIO 110 1998-JULY 1999
IN 1993 I MOVED INTO STUDIO 110 AT MILO ARTS WHICH WAS AND OLD GRADE SCHOOL CONVERTED INTO STUDIO FOR ARTISTS. FROM 1993 TILL DEC OF 1995 I HELD RECORDING SESSION THERE FOR OTHER LOCAL ARTISTS, THEN IN 1997 RICK KLAUS THEIS, RUDEBOY SMITH AND I FORMED THE BAND STUDIO 110. WE RECORDED A CD CALLED SCRATH AND DID TWO SHOW BEFORE THEIS LEFT THE BAND. LATER ON WE RELEASED THE OUTTAKES FOR THE SCRATH SESSION AND CALLED IT SCRAPS. UNFORTUNATELY, AFTER MIXING DOWN THEISS PROJECT CALLED LOCA GRAVE.JIM SHEPARD DIED IN OCTOBER OF 1998. JIMBO NEVER GOT TO SEE THE FRUITS OF OUR EXPERIMENTS ON STUDIO 110S SCRATH & SCRAPS. HOWEVER, HE DID GIVE HIS APPROVAL TO V-3S OTHER SIDE OF DARKNESS RELEASE. DAVE IMMEL WAS RECRUITED IN NOVEMBER OF 1999 & STUDIO 110 RELEASED PSYCHO BITCH IN NOVEMBER OF 2000. IN AUGUST OF 2000 RUDY SMITH LEFT STUDIO 110 FOR PERSONAL REASONS. STUDIO 110 STILL RECORDS BUT DOES NOT PREFORM LIVE. CURRENT MEMBERS ARE: WILD BILL, GREG CASEY, DAVE IMMEL, NUDGE SQUIDFISH, RICK KLAUS THEIS AND ANYBODY ELSE WE CAN SUCKER INTO WORKING WITH US..

THE MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS STORY
Mike "Rep" Hummel" recorded his first single ("Rocket To Nowhere /Quasar" MOXIE RECORDS) along with a handful of other crude crud classics in 1975, including the recently released Swedish single "Mama Was A Schitzo Daddy Was A Vegetable Man /Rocket Music On". "Rocket To Nowhere" was pressed in 1976 and 'released' in 1978 in the Berkeley, Ca. MOXIE label to at-the-time resounding indifference. "Back in 1975 absolutely nothing was happening locally or on radio except Disco music and California Country Rock" sez Hummel, "It was a very dark time for original rock. I just wrote the music that was missing from my life but was in my brain, and recorded it by bouncing tracks between one-track decks. So in a twisted way disco music was a sort of inspiration to me. Originally it was just myself and TOMMY JAY on drums recording and bouncing tracks in Tommy's basement. There was no 'Quotas' band per se at that time; The Quotas were the SONGS, not band members." A few years later Tommy and Mike and Tommy's brother "The General" formed a live performing group, calling themselves TRUE BELIEVERS. "True Believers became a media buzzword after the REV. JIM JONES GUYANA MASSACRE for anyone belonging to a weird cult", says Hummel, "That group was in essence The Quotas reborn and renamed, just like good reborn cultists should be. Plus we were playing Tommy and The General's songs too by that point and so a new name seemed appropriate". In 1980 the critically acclaimed True Believers "Accept It!"7" EP was released on Hummel's fledgling NEW AGE RECORDS label, and actually sold 1000 copies, "quite a feat for a domestic band on an unknown label at that time". The New Age label also released singles by SCREAMING URGE, and JIM SHEPARD's VERTICAL SLIT among others. IN 1981 True Believers disbanded and a few years later the final New Age release, GREAT PLAINS "Mark Don & Mel" 12" EP was released and the label dissolved. "By1984 NEW AGE had become a buzz-word for Yanni-like music. I suspected a CIA conspiracy at the time... I was sick that decade." muses Hummel. In the final year of the group Al Martin (A.K.A. Nudge Squidfish) had joined on, and continued along with Tommy Jay to record with Mike throughout the 80's (and 90's). After a year long stint with the Great Plains in 1984, MIke left and started the D.I.Y. OLD AGE/NO AGE label, which produced 15 custom-made artwork /cassette only releases from 1985 to 1990. These tapes featured the first recordings of groups like THE GIBSON BROTHERS and previously unheard early recordings by RON HOUSE and JIM SHEPARD among others, as well as Mike's own recorded material. "Hand-made casettes were a viable and inexpensive alternative to exploitive record label shenanigans which also allowed all involved total artistic freedom" says Hummel, "and many get reviewed in major publications like SPIN and MAXIMUM ROCK AND ROLL. Those tapes really got around!". Mike was playing with a "Rock N' Rural" group CAMPFIRE WALKERS at the turn of that decade ("that was my hippie period, I had dropped out of everything") but by1992 the local band scene was exploding with new hard-rocking talent, and Mike's D.I.Y. recording sensibilities came into new demand. "Groups like MONSTER TRUCK FIVE and BOYS FROM NOWHERE were actually playing early Quotas songs, so I naturally fell in with them" says Hummel, who went on to record and "Lovingly Fuck With" (Hummel's term) recordings by the likes of NEW BOMB TURKS, GAUNT, GUIDED BY VOICES, BASSHOLES, STRAPPING FIELD HANDS and THOMAS JEFFERSON SLAVE APARTMENTS among many others. This all coincided with the underground Philadelphia label SILTBREEZE's release of the "STUPOR HIATUS" LP, which featured 70s and 80's recordings by Hummel and restablished the monikker MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS to stay ("I figured why confuse people any more?"). Mike also formed QUOTAS '92 to perform his punk songs live and recorded a live EP for Siltbreeze later that year. Says Hummel, "SILTBREEZE was a label with amazing integrity run by wonderful person(s). They had no 'big-time' agenda". But QUOTAS '92 was short-live when their drummer went insane and had to be institutionalized (I think he was taking my lyrics a little too close to heart . I knew then how Ozzy Ozbourne must have felt. My lyrics were sometimes nihilistic but usually tongue-in-cheek; life IS worth living!"). Mike again retired from group performance until very recently. "Tommy and Al and I never really stopped playing and recording, we just went back to the basement (actually a converted barn) and played there or under the stars, my favorite audience". BUT NOW MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS ARE BACK, at least for a while, playing select local shows and making a small amount of out-of-town gigs. " Tommy Al and I figured we should do it before we get too much fatter and our peckers shrivel up and our livers explode, if they haven't already... We still ROCK HARD AND LONG and have added the wailing guitar of our long time collaborator JOHNNY FURNACE. It's time to say hello and maybe goodbye to our friends in other cities that we love". NEW RECORDINGS are also said to be in the works as of this writing. "There's already stuff in the bag waiting to be heard ; we'll see..." INDEED WE WILL.
