Artist description
Beth Miller and Caroline Shooner of the duo "Her Sweet Time" first met in the lively folk music scene of St. John's, Newfoundland.
Having arrived there to continue her graduate studies, Beth quickly became immersed in the musical education of George Street (home to the most bars per capita in North America). Lead singer for the popular female folk-rock band Nine Degrees East, Beth was often to be seen at the Fat Cat, a local blues bar.
It is there that she met Caroline, one fateful open-mike evening. The duo made their debut appearances in venues around St. John's, and also in Goose-Bay, Labrador, where they were featured on the CBC North morning show.
Her Sweet Time's influences can be found in the Canadiana of Neil Young, the talking poetry of Joni Mitchell and the sweet harmonies of the Indigo Girls. The songs often come from the places Beth has lived in - and they are many, scattered from one coast to the other. Natural story-teller, she happily entertains her audiences with the often comical tales of the duo's adventures. For example, while in Labrador, Beth and Caroline spent some time in very small communities, some of which were only accessible by airplane. The planes flown by the highly skilled if at times overly heroic "bush pilots" were not always in tip-top shape. One early morning's departure, the lift-off was dramatically interrupted by the cry of a woman whose seat had suddenly collapsed underneath her. With not much concern or surprise, the flight attendant kindly asked her to move up to the next available seat and the plane headed off towards the coast... The song "Hanging out the Wash" was written in one such Labrador coastal community. It is a conversation between two women from a small town hanging out their laundry... and plotting their escape. There's always an element of affectionate humour in songs like these, notes Beth, whose own southern Ontario small town roots are a constant source of inspiration.
While Caroline is originally from Montreal she and Beth have now settled in Victoria, BC. From one big island to another, Caroline traded the winter snow storms for February crocuses. She does return to her native town through songs like "Montreal", in which she pays tribute to her old haunts.
Since their move out West, Her Sweet Time has taken part in the BC Festival of the Arts, in Nelson, and played venues across the province. You can catch them next at the Spiral Cafe (418 Craigflower), on Saturday, July 19th, from 8 to 10 pm. This will also be the Release Event for their first and long-awaited CD.
