Artist description
“Catchy harmonies combined with soulful singing and tight ensemble interplay is a pretty simple formula for success, but a lot of bands don’t seem to get it. Sonic Aquarium does.” Take it from Lou King of the Journal Newspaper Group, or take it from the growing number of fans that Sonic Aquarium attracts to their shows. At first a shared vision among three individuals, and now a reality, Sonic Aquarium plays shows to the masses of music fans in the Washington metropolitan area week after week.
“Our music is best described as groove-oriented, melodic pop,” says singer/songwriter Mike Gordon. The songs are a collection of heartfelt tunes that blend the rhythmic stylings of Dave Matthews with the harmonic inflections of Seal and Peter Gabriel, all of whom Gordon cites as major influences. While the music can be intellectual lyrically, the band is also known for its ability to groove hard and get an audience on its feet.
Credit Joe Kay on bass and Chris Keever on drums for pushing the rhythmic envelope. Kay, a singer-songwriter in his own right, not only adds new and innovative bass lines, but also brings additional depth to Sonic Aquarium with his ear for production values. Keever, a nonconformist with a background in jazz and funk, applies his personal thumbprint by contributing unique grooves and arrangement ideas for each song.
Formerly known as 3 Times Fast, the band became Sonic Aquarium in late 2000. Keever explains, “When Joe came into the band, we instantly knew we were headed in another direction. We tweaked the arrangements of almost every song; some received completely new harmonic and rhythmic treatments. We’re also introducing some of Joe’s material as well, and we felt the name needed to be changed to reflect that.”
When asked about performances, Gordon replies, “We aren’t just going through the motions. There’s a difference between playing music, and actually putting on a live show. We’re trying to get some energy in it and make some moments happen on stage - that’s what makes each show special. We hope to capture that spirit in our audience, and make it as enjoyable for them as it is for us.”
Sonic Aquarium has fused smart songwriting, melodic hooks, interesting rhythms, and energetic performances into a tight package. If you’re looking for what Pitch magazine describes as, “lyrics to captivate your mind and music to shake your soul,” your search has come to a victorious close.
