Artist History
Russian Girlfriend started following the departure, due to musical differences of Dave, Matt, and Matt’s brother Jez from “P.S.O.V.”, a band of Matt’s creation. That was mid 2000. They called on a chap named James to play the other guitar along with Matt. Matt & James had worked together before and it started to move along just fine. Russian Girlfriend played their first gig at Holbrooks Festival.
They then signed a management deal and went on to write more music and prepare for more live dates. Following a change of bassist due to personal difficulties, Rob took over from Jez, giving the band a more up-beat sound. On his audition he started jumping around the room like a lunatic. “Great,” thought Matt. “He’ll fit right in.”
But then James was offered a job in Manchester. Everyone was upset, but the wage offer was too good to turn down, so James went. We held out and continued as a three piece playing gigs and looking for a replacement capable of filling James’ shoes, until we struck lucky and found Jools. He fitted straight in completing the current line up. The music is more solid and better than ever.
The music itself is hard to sum up in two words. Matt’s an eccentric and it does show in his writing.
We banned metal, punk and jazz, but a little pop got through. There is a classical influence mixed with the darker side of an overdriven guitar. Jools playing flowing melodic guitar riffs over Matt’s harsher, more guttural playing, whilst Rob and Dave fly about the rhythm section in wild abandon. The songs are always about something a little bit out of the ordinary. Perhaps about musical instruments that play all by themselves, or the process of horticulture within the bread-making industry.
There is often a surprise in each song and plenty of menace. There is also the danger that you might find their songs stuck in your head
as many others have discovered... |
