NorthEastShore (The Compass Album)
"Fate Established" or self appointed-- who cares? There is no debating that NorthEastShore are on some level the "Rap Ambassadors" they claim to be.
NES are the eyes, ears- and very confident, shrewedly opinionated, extremely aggressive- mouths, of generation Fuck It.
Givin' the mental adolescents
history lessons:
Essence of time,
thought provoking rhyme,
and for the open mind...
KNUCKLE UP
NorthEastShore has taken live hip-hop somewhere else entirely. They're explosive. Exploding. On fire, with purpose. What the hell does that sound like?
Take an Irreverent, yet socio-conscious, Early Beastie. Give him some Korn Aingst, a bowl of Wu Tang. Listen as he weaves smooth-ass stories with Slick Rick ease over beats and to rhythms that in their mere bump-n-grind-ability rival those of Tribe.
Intelligent, no apology, lyrics are harnessed to a brisk and nimble delivery. But what sets NES apart is how their rhymes ride the beat and tongue the rhythm to get that groove.
Timothy Brodhahgen, FRIDGE Magazine, NYC says "Fuck what you heard. Hip-hop has not gone under. Bubbling up through the brackish waters of wack like a rap tsunami is the NorthEastShore. No descriptions fits, but it tastes like a blunt of the Roots, Wu, Bad Brains and Bob Marley smoked to the neck. One pull and hip-hop has new meaning...NES are like the first time on a new drug, completely original, slightly confusing and wild as fuck."
Hike the pigskin and throw the feet
way outta bounds
clear past the 5 towns
and the L. I. Sound
Pound the streets with my ear grounded down at the street
I'm houndin' this meat
im hungry so you know I'm gon' eat...
COME CORRECT
I was a little apprehensive when I heard NES had paired down from their 7 man group back to the original 4 man ensemble. (For the novice NES listener, the Emcees have been their since NES' inception.) I was relieved to find a clean, beautiful, metamorphosis. Not only was there no buyers remorse, this is my favorite album to date.
That a bassist, drummer, and 2 emcees can create such fullness of sound, is remarkable. NES's, NorthEastShore (The Compass Album) has it all: 11 tracks (9 spankin' new, 2 Re-mix's) with top-notch beats, flawless execution and elocution, sultry grooves, the occasional sampling, all organically rooted in the one true essence of hip hop: the battle.
I could give a damn about what you think
'cause i got nothin' to lose
That's why I'm stingy with this f^*!n' shit,
King of the Jews.
Makin' the shrewed moves,
soon to be the Who's Who of rap
My crew's tools are packed
and my fuse blew the track
LIGHT IT UP
It is empowering to see these two emcees- Java and Ill-on, these visionaries- aggressively spit their truths. Almost more incredible is the band. When was the last time you saw a tight, creative, live hip-hop band that at once is risk taking, challenging, sensual, questioning, playful, inspiring, and mind-numbing?
Isaac Bashevis Singer once said "The very essence of literature is the war between emotion and intellect.” Apply that to hip hop and NorthEastShore are writing the book.
