Artist History
Ryan Lea is a young self-taught songwriter/singer/pianist/keyboard programmer who is beginning to create his own unique style of pop/electronica. Ryan began playing and learning piano at a young age, figuring out chords and learning melodies by listening to his parents record collection in the late seventies. "My parents were avid record collectors, so at a very young age I was introduced to some really cool stuff, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and especially Supertramp, were among some of my favorites. I liked the music that really told a story, both with lyrics and with strong melodies. Upon entering high school, Ryan was actively involved in drama and acting, but when one year, it was announced that they were auditioning for an all original score for one the school plays, Ryan jumped at the chance. "I really hadn’t ever written a song at all at that point but for some reason I jumped up and said I could offer some songs of my own....leaving myself a week to come up with 3 songs which didn’t even exist yet. But I was so calm about it, I just always felt like it was something I would naturally be able to do." The following week, 3 songs were introduced to the director, and all 3 songs were subsequently a part of the show, one was sung by Ryan himself. "That was the beginning of it really, From that point on I knew that if I had the proper equipment, I could only keep getting better and better.." And he has....in the last couple of years, Ryan has written and recorded a full length CD called "Invisible Blue", a moody, dark and often sexy sounding album. "The songs in "Invisible Blue" are all fictional stories about different characters with similar problems...they all deal with a struggling hero type thing..battling against time, circumstance and the norm. The theory behind “Invisible Blue†is a telling of all these deep dark hidden desires, fears and curiosities that we all have. There are tales of voyeurism, stalking, vampires, sex slavery and made-to-order robotic lovers…you know, the usual pop music topics….†I’m very proud still of a lot of the songs on that LP, but the stuff I'm writing now is definitely a bit more optimistic, there’s a definite progression there.." In addition to writing his own cds he has also contributed music for Independent plays and films in Vancouver. Most recently wrote a few piano pieces for the drama "Crashing Dreamland" directed by Jonathon Lin. "My music has always had a good blend I think, of both pop and soundtrackish type stuff, so writing for films or live performers/interpretations is something that excites me very much." Ryan is now mid-way through the writing/recording process of his second full-length cd tentatively titled "Thrust" "A lot of these new songs have an all or nothing kind of moral to them, these songs are a lot more personal this time too, a lot less fiction and more songs about what’s going on with me personally.....now that’s really scary!" Presently available is the new all-instrumental EP called ‘Muted’. “I’ve put together the ‘Muted EP’ as a kind of Christmas gift for friends and fans to get a sneak peek at some of the new songs, it also offers a unique perspective on all the songs because they are still in their instrumental stage.†Ryan’s new music has already caught the attention of live giggers both in Toronto and here in Vancouver, including music reps working with both Nettwerk and V2 records. Ryan will be continuing to record and perform in Vancouver over the next few months so keep your ears open!! Ryan Lea writes and produces under the name ‘Nimbus Recording’. |
