"Nowhere Fast" by The Darlings 1/24/02
You know you're listening to a talented band when you are hooked within the first 20 seconds of a song. The Darlings, with their jumpy 90's alternative meets chick rock vibe, hooked me in only 10 seconds. "Secret," was appropriately placed as the first song off their album "Nowhere Fast." I would go as far as to say that singer Ida DiCenso's vocals on this song are enchanting. She gives every indication that she is emotionally attached to the song. The catchy acoustic riff is the work of guitarist Owen Jambor.
The second song, "Azure" has more of a rock vibe. More aggressive vocals on top of heavier guitars, heavier drums, and a catchy bass line by Scott Crawford.
"Bitches Brew," the CDs melancholy last song, slows things down a bit. Drummer Troy Gardner keeps a fixed beat for this lounge-esque tune. Each song has a different style, which keeps things interesting-who wants to listen to the same song over and over again? The melodies get stuck in your head and you find yourself singing along in the car while the people in the car next to you stare at you like you're insane. Other songs on the disc include "As I Cried," "You Must Hate Me," and "And I Know (You Love Her More)."
I recommend picking up a copy of the disc and catching a show if you can.
