Press Reviews
Who would’ve thought a year or so ago that rock’n’roll would become fun once again? That
is, who would’ve thought there’d be actual rock bands playing around? It doesn’t take a
genius to know that this Alternative “stuff” would end sooner or later. The fact is, rock’n’roll
is the alternative now, but there are a few bands out there stirring the pot. In Europe, there’s
the loud and proud Backyard Babies. In New York, there’s the resilient and faithful
DGeneration. And in SF, there’s one band that promises to rattle your eardrums with their
own brand of chaos. Romeo’s Dead.
Formed in San Francisco a couple of years ago, Romeo’s Dead is an explosive mix of punk
rock riffs, big choruses and a multitude of personality. Upon hearing the band’s full-length
CD, it is obvious that Romeo’s Dead are 100% into what they do. Each song is a mini-story
that could easily be heard in any John Hughes film of the 1980s. Any teen-angst flick from the
period, for that matter. The band’s songs evoke feelings of alienation, heartache,
dysfunctional behavior and fun. No matter how screwed up vocalist Zane Smith’s tortured
lyrics sound at any given moment, there’s always a light-hearted sense of r’n’r fun to keep
things balanced.
Romeo’s Dead consists of Smith on lead vocals, a sarcastic crooner with an impeccable sense
of rhythm and rhyme; Aaron “The Kid” Harvey on the geetar, a six-string, mohawk-laden
rebel with a larger-than-life stage presence; Forry Maestretti on the stix, a rock-solid testament
to why you don’t need a drum machine in r’n’r; and finally, Jayson Jaymes on the bass, an
outspoken degenerate sportin’ the lowest-slung axe in town. A motley crew by all accounts,
these four are ready for superstardom and make no bones about their goals of world
domination.
In talking with these four gentlemen, it occured to me that they don’t just play rock’n’roll.
They live, breath, eat and drink it. That’s straight-up, no chaser. And aside from their
affection for Paul Stanley and Sid Vicious, they are all blood brothers willing to go to the wall
for one another. In this time of corporate-label mergers and interchangeable cookie-cutter,
surface bands, they are a refreshingly new concept. Recently, I miandered down to one of
SF’s seedier drinking establishments to meet the four young fellows, partake in some premium
beer and a little bit of conversation about music, friendship and rock’n’roll dreams. |
