    Artist History
FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS THIS GUITARIST AND BASSIST HAVE BEEN PERFECTING SONGS AND THE STYLE WHICH WE NOW CALL REDSHIFT. IN JULY OF 2000, DRUMMER, TOM ROBERTS JOINED THE BAND, AND HAS TAKEN REDSHIFT TO NEW LEVELS,WITH HIS PLAYING ABILITY. HAVING GONE THROUGH THREE DIFFERENT DRUMMERS IN THE PAST YEAR, GARY AND JON FEEL THAT TOM IS BY FAR THE BEST DRUMMER THAT REDSHIFT HAS HAD IN THE PAST 10 YEARS. IN 1999, THE BAND RECORDED THE CD CALLED, ANOTHER PLACE, AND FOLLOWED IT UP WITH BIG SKY IN JANUARY OF 2000. BOTH WERE RECORDED DIGITALLY BY DRUMMER STEVE BLANK, WHO ALSO PLAYED V-DRUMS ON ALL 17 TRACKS. TOM BRINGS A FRESH ACOUSTIC TAKE ON THE SONGS, AND REDSHIFT IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON NEW MATERIAL TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR.

    Press Reviews
"MUSIC OFTEN HAS A TRANSPORTING EFFECT ON THOSE WHO MAKE IT. ELECTRIC GUITARISTS, IN PARTICULAR, SEEM TO PICK UP VIBRATIONS FROM OTHER REALMS, AND OFTEN GO OFF THEIR ROCKERS WHEN PLACED IN FRONT OF A RHYTHM SECTION. HERE'S A PRIME EXAMPLE." NOAH E. LIQUID AUDIO The roots of this Chicago area three-piece band go back ten years to when guitarist Gary Skopick and bassist Jon Maru started playing together. These two Redshift CDs also feature Steve Blank on drums. All their songs are instrumentals and could generally be categorized as jazz fusion or prog fusion. The compositions are mostly jam-based rockers in 4/4 time with solos over the top. While the guitar is the primary solo instrument, there are lots of fretless bass solos as well. The bass work is much of the reason for the jazz feel of the group. Skopick's guitar work sounds at times in the same vein as Jeff Beck, Hendrix, or Eric Johnson (check out "Distant Thunder" on "Big Sky") - mostly blues-based solid rock and roll with some jazzy elements thrown in for good measure. While Blank doesn't step to the forefront too much, he does provide a solid backdrop for the guitar and bass. One of the impressive aspects of both these albums is that all the songs were recorded live in the studio. This type of recording obviously captures the energy of the band nicely, especially since this style of music lends itself well to live performance. The first album, "Another Place," is really more like an EP, clocking in at just over 20 minutes. It starts off with the song "Another Place" which sounds a lot like New Sun in places, with some patterned guitar parts and some cool delay effects. The album's closer "Final Stretch" is reminiscent of the Dixie Dregs' "Cruise Control" - a fast rocking number that cranks. On the full-length follow-up album "Big Sky," the band continues in a similar direction. The most noticeable difference seems to be that use of more varied guitar effects. The parallel fifth harmonies on "Supernova" and filter sweeps on "The Dragon" are different than the more typical delay/ reverb/ chorus tones used on the first release. Those who enjoy fast instrumental jazz/ rock jams with lots of soloing should like Redshift. - Mike Grimes-EXPOSE MAGAZINE " Wormhole When I was in school, my favorite two subjects were math and science. I always loved seeing where the two would pop up in real life too. In math, I was always attracted to triangles for some reason. I guess it was because I always visualize things in 3D and the three sides of the triangle and their dependence on each other pleased me. While listening to Redshift's new album, Wormhole, I am reminded of my fascination with triangles. Redshift is 3 musicians creating the most amazingly visual music I can imagine. The three of them represent a triangle to me as they are totally dependent on each other. Gary Skopick on lead guitar never ceases to amaze me with his guitar work. His songs are hook driven jazz-rock masterpieces. He leads the band on amazing journeys and then steps back and lets Jon Maru take over on bass and drive the ship for a while. To say that these two players are incredible would be a serious understatement. Gary and Jon both show their incredible abilities to both lead and support the band in Wormhole. While Gary and Jon are amazing me with their leads and instrumental versatility, Tommy is holding it all together with his equally amazing drumming. I bet watching Tommy play the drums is an experience in itself. I imagine him as a wildman flailing away on the drums, all the while keeping it all together in a tight and incredibly interesting way. Tommy's drumming totally rocks and it's versatile and whatever the song needs, Tommy delivers. The material on Wormhole is versatile and very visual, and the song placement is completely right. The title cut, Wormhole is followed by my personal favorite, Revelation. Putting these two songs together totally makes the album for me. Two parts of a story I think. The material on wormhole is very visual and listening to the album repeately makes it better and better. I find myself anticipating the hooks coming around in the tunes, and I hum them throughout the day" Bud Bennett from i like pie
