REFER TO MANUAL "Tonight, Friday-June 7th, I returned to an old haunt, Merlin’s, for the first time in like almost 10 years, to check out an amazing band, Refer To Manual. Having heard a live demo cd of them not even days earlier, I knew I would not be disappointed and I was right. An eclectic bunch of guys, performing some of the tightest jams of fusion-infused funk/hip-hop/rock I've ever heard. The band members, gathering from all different backgrounds, and each an accomplished musician in his own right, blend together to make one righteous sound. One could definitely depict the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Run DMC, Hendrix, and Zappa influences in their original music. On bass, Tom Deitrick is a 16th note meter-man, who claims to come from the school of heavy metal. On 5 string electric violin, Martin Sanford-Cameron is a Jerry Goodman/Jean Luc Ponty-like wizard. On drums, Jonathan Schuleit, is a monster of heavy jazz orientation. On guitar, Patrick McCarthy is a wailing man of choice notes. And last, but not least, is the vocally talented singer/frontman/rap man, Robert Lake. As I listened and absorbed the positive energy and chemistry of this band, I kept thinking to myself, "Where have these guys been? Where have I been? Why aren't these guys being talked about more?" Refer To Manual is a definite must-see for any musician or music lover who enjoys hearing cutting edge creativity at its best. This band would do well to link up with some other locals like Saltpeter and Sweatin' Like Nixon and blow the house down. For more info on them, visit www.refertomanual.com. I am highly recommending this band and hope that there are many more opportunities to see them again. Until next time, support the local music scene by getting out there and treating yourself to something different than your usual favorite flavor. You may be pleasantly surprised and pleased." -from “Ida’s Reviews” on www.brrtv.com
