Artist History The eclectic, often eccentric style of the neo-acid rock band Bromö continues to defy expectations. Its leader, the brilliant, reclusive Bromo Hmnb (phonetically spelled "Hummbgnobb," the first and penultimate "b," second "m," and "g" being silent), has been described as a "Scandinavian giant," a postmodern "main ā caniche," and an "enigmatic brawny Bjork," but the little that is actually known about who he is and where he comes from has been so augmented with conjecture over the years that it is difficult to separate fact from legend. The tradition of his having been found by his adoptive parents, the Hmnbs of Pawtucket, floating in a tiny canoe off the coast of Madagascar, appears to be either completely false or so embellished as to be unreliable. In the few rare interviews he has wittingly agreed to, no more than a handful of English words have been intelligible through his thick Scandinavian accent, so it is impossible to know whether he answered the questions truthfully or ironically, as is his wont. Thus the man, whose on-stage antics have so often amazed and confounded his fans, perplexes and befuddles those around him, even when not performing. Ozlheimlich Poz, one of Bromo's oldest friends, once remarked, "Bromo often perplexes and befuddles me, even when he's not performing." In 2000, having the "Millennium Bug in his bonnet," as he put it, Bromo got the band back together under the innovative name "Bromö" (which is thought to be the ablative plural of Bromo in low Icelandic) in order to record a retrospective collection of songs for a new CD, entitled "Captain Nemo," after the song, which is featured in the collection. After many grueling single takes, Bromo returned to his retreat in the permafrost wilderness of Minnesota, leaving the unmixed tracks in the care of his trusty engineer, O. Poz, who mixed, remixed, and mixed again, until he could mix no more! The CD would have been released at that point, but Bromo, ever the perfectionist, has been waiting for new material for the jewel case inserts.
