Artist History
JUST when it seems that all the best bands and all the biggest sounds are hitting these shores from the United States, along come Sixty Mile Smile to buck the trend and break the mould.
Formed in the garages of the badlands of Essex - from the ashes of the group Freefall, who gained a reputation for their storming live set opening for the likes of Papa Roach at the Brixton Academy and Propoghandi at London's Mean Fiddler - the Sixty Mile Smile sound is one of power, pop, punk and precision. It is the classic three piece groove; a winning combination of bounce and melody, vitality and life. It is music to sing to, music to dance to, music to live by.
Evidence of the quality of this young band can be heard on their debut, self released four track EP. Although combining a sound that is fuelled and influenced by such acts as Green Day, Nirvana and Blink 182, this quartet of compositions - comprising 'Unstable', 'Always', 'Again And Again' and 'Far Behind' - shows that this is a band who are about much more than mere tradition. For Sixty Mile Smile have songs, great songs. Songs that stick in your head and songs that resound in your body.
The men responsible for this are vocalist and guitarist Paul James and bassist Jon Linale.
"The songs we write are the most important part of what we do," believes James. "Without those we would really be nothing, and so that is the thing that we work hardest on. We hope that shows in the music that we play. We believe the songs are as good as they can be and I believe that people will be able to hear that for themselves."
"We can tell we're getting better with each song that we write," is the opinion of Jon Linale. "The stuff we're writing now is just blowing us away."
Starting a new band from scratch is never easy, but Sixty Mile Smile have what it takes to go far. They have the songs, they have the sound and - with the recent addition of one time Understand drummer Andy Sheperd - they have the chops to make it all work. The band sound great. The band sound massive.
