Artist History
Tracy LaShunda Taylor born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up on the south side of the “Windy City.” Tracy was destined to sing gospel drawing on a wealth of influences of a family with a strong Christian background. Tracy has been deeply rooted in gospel music at a young tender age, being baptized by her grandfather Rev. Scott Bolton along with her two older sisters, Sheryl and Monica.
Very artistic and gifted with her hands, Tracy draws, paints, sculpture, does hair, etc. Tracy was not the average child nor teenager even though she was very active in school serving in student government and playing volleyball for her school team. She was always homebound clinging to her parents, Vinson & Evelena Curry.
“As a child I remember sneaking a pair of my mother’s heels, closing my bedroom door, letting my hair down from the ponytails, and using a large cooking spoon for my microphone. In my room I could be whoever or do whatever I wanted to.” It’s obvious Tracy found fun in singing, joy in singing, and herself in singing.
In trying to pursue a professional singing career, Tracy teamed up with two childhood friends. They progressed into a hot hometown attraction in the Chicago area, winning many talents shows and local events. However, each of them ventured on and went their separate ways. It was only a matter of time before Tracy and her voice made it out behind those closed bedroom walls in the inner city streets of Chicago. “One Friday I went with my sister Monica to choir rehearsal and she asked me to sing for the choir director. Even though I was a world away from my bedroom, I sung anyway and became a member of the choir. I remember while singing my first solo “We Are Christians By Our Love”, members in the kitchen of the church came out to see who was singing. They were surprised to see that it was I, the girl who was so quiet around them. From then on, my Pastor would make requests for me to sing.”
While attending Grambling State University in Louisiana, Tracy met with producer Carlos Jones (“Big Wolf“) and a long time friend Etienne Boyd. The three of them started to vibe about musical ideas. Shortly thereafter, Etienne became her personal manager and Tracy was on her way towards her singing career. Tracy soon became a favorite down south attraction. She shared the stage and spotlight with Slave (Ichiban), UGK (Jive), and Escape (So So Def) at Grambling’s Homecoming. She has performed in such places as New York City, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. With a little sweat, hard work, and dedication, Tracy has come a long way from singing into a cooking spoon in her mother’s heels.
During the course of this adventure with fame and stardom just a blink away, Tracy was troubled at heart because all of this did not feel right. Little did she know that God had already begun His work within her and had a different road for her to travel. Tracy’s mom later revealed to her that she was praying that God would not allow this R&B career to go forth, but that she would sing to the Glory of God. Tracy later graduated from Grambling State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and moved to Indianapolis Indiana planning to go to Law School. She began to work for a law firm, but continued to travel and perform in different areas making a name for herself.
She joined a local church, but still had not totally surrendered to the call God had on her life. In mid-October, a co-worker at her job invited Tracy to visit her church to hear a guest Evangelist speak. Surely she went not knowing that this was the night her life would change and never be the same. Tracy was already battling within to make the right decision to serve God. As the Evangelist was speaking on a number of issues the Lord had given him, he stopped and said, “The Lord said to give Him back that talent-- that voice-- so that He can place His anointing on it and use it to Glorify Him.” Instantly, Tracy knew he was talking to her and she literally shriveled down in her seat because the time had come for her to make her decision. The decision the Lord will present to all of us at some point and time. “Life or Death, Blessings or Curses” (Deut 30:19).
Deciding to no longer straddle the fence, Tracy chooses to completely give her life to Christ, which brings her to where she is today. She loves God wholeheartedly and every since that night, God has been doing miraculous things in her life. On November 17, 2000, God baptized Tracy in the Holy Spirit, granting her the gift of speaking in tongues. He also has encamped a group of saved, Holy Ghost-filled, fire baptized individuals in her life. Tracy has made a 180-degree turn. She is now a vessel for the Lord and no longer performs for man, but minister to God’s people through music. Tracy now enjoys working with both the children and adult choir in her home church (Recovery Tabernacle Christian Center) and waits for the Lord to direct and manage her & His gospel career. Truly the Word of God is the Truth because He says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).”
Tracy prays and thanks God to this day for many reasons. While growing up in the church, the Holy Ghost got a head start in her life. Therefore the seed was planted early which kept her from traveling down a path of destruction. She also thanks God for the prayers of her mother, Evelena who wanted God’s will to be done in Tracy’s life. Most of all, Tracy prays that this “BIO” does more than acquaint you with her, but that it would bring you to know the Lord, the same God whom she now serves, and what it is He has planned for your life. GOD BLESS!
