Artist History
Though the band Shiloh Fivecoat is relatively new to the Oklahoma music scene, its members are certainly not. Danny Pruitt (guitar, vocals, organ, harmonica), Garrett Hellman (guitar, mandolin), and Tim Nokes (drums), joined by various other members, formed the band Range in 1997, and immediately began playing local venues and festivals. Heavily influenced by the rock-pop stylings of bands like U2 and Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band recorded and released their debut CD in the winter of 1999, while most of the band’s members were still in high school. Following its release, the band immediately began winning fans, playing passionate and energetic live shows that packed coffee houses and other venues. Sharing the stage with local acts like Ester Drang, Range built a very large and dedicated fan base.
Fall of 2000, though, following the departure of their bass player, the band’s focus shifted from the stage to the studio. The band’s sound also made a shift, moving from up-beat pop songs to deeper, and more mellow, acoustic-driven tunes. Following several months of writing, the band returned to the studio in the spring of 2001 to record their follow-up EP, Noise. Richer and more fully realized than its predecessor, Noise showcased the band’s best work to date. Its introspective lyrics, along with warm guitars and layered vocals gave the songs a feel similar those of John Hiatt or Red House Painters; yet the sound was still all their own. Despite the fact that the band still had no bass player, and, thus, were unable to play shows to support it, the release was still successful, a favorite to fans, and even managing to find local radio air play. But because live performance was still the Range’s main passion, its members eventually became frustrated, and in the summer following the release of Noise, went on hiatus.
Throughout the fall of 2001, Danny Pruitt continued writing songs. That winter he set down to record a few tracks acoustic, and even played a handful of solo shows. He soon realized, though, that what he really wanted was to record and play with a band. So in early 2002, Pruitt called on former band mates Hellman and Nokes, and, with long-time friend Chris Stellman joining on bass, Shiloh Fivecoat was born. Losing no time, they immediately began rehearsing, and the result is a sound that’s better than ever. The band’s future is very promising, with plans of doing a few local shows, and then reentering the studio later in the spring.
