Artist description
So what the fuck is Burnside6? You take a guitar part that is heavy enough to crush you; vicious enough to cut your head off, or just down right eerie. You pin it down with a fat low end from a grooving bass line to keep the pit going. Pile them over drums that kick you in the chest like a mortar shell or rattle off hits like a machinegun. Top the whole thing with a voice that draws you into its tight flow before cutting you to the bone with a scream pushin' pure aggression. Pack the whole thing tight until it's primed power keg and set the motherfucker off with a slammin' live show. And that is Burnside6. 'Nuff said 'bout the sound, right? So how did this crazy shit come together?
The core of what became Burnside6 formed in the fall of '97. Picking up the pieces after each of their respective Cincinnati area bands dissolved, Paul "Jr." Merrill on guitar and Scott Hershner on drums began putting some new material together. Jr. and Scott set out to make the heaviest music either had been a part of yet. The two pooled their influences ranging from Pantera, Machinehead and early Metallica (You know, when they still kicked ass), to Sevendust, Corrosion Of Conformity, and Tool. Chris "Feltdaddy" Feltner, Scott's former band mate, joined the still unnamed outfit. Chris did time as the band's second guitarist until the band tightened up it's ranks and he took over as bassist. Everything in the BS6 camp seemed to be heading in the right direction. The band tightened up though long hours of practice, continued to improve their song writing, and had even started going under the Burnside6 name. Only one problem, they still didn't have a vocalist.
Months of trying out singer, over twenty of them, had left the band feeling less then optimistic. Then fate, or just pure fucking luck, stepped in. Another band that practiced in the same warehouse as Burnside6 said they might know someone right for the part. Jr., Scott, and Chris were introduced to vocalist E.J. Boggs. E.J.'s agro-rap style influenced by N.W.A., Cypress Hill, Snoop, and the Deftones, among others, gave the group a new edge.
Revitalized, and with a complete line-up, in 2000 Burnside6 set out to record their debut CD. Tracks were laid down at Keith Keen's, BS6's live sound tech, Sound Factory studios and produced by Keith, Jr., and Scott. The self titled 13 track CD was officially released on June 9th, 2001. Just check out song's like "So Fine", "Misery", "Blank", and "Shifted" to see just how harsh the BS6 mix can get.
Get your ass down to one of Bunside6's packed out shows and check them out in action. See what BS6's dedicated, and ever growing, fan-base all ready knows. See 'ya there.
