    Artist History
I was always choosing theatre, dance and music over sports, so I've really been performing most of my life. After a friend gifted me a guitar in '94, I was off and running. Did some touring with the Grateful Dead that summer on a schoolbus out of Humboldt, boy was everybody sick of Bonnie McGee and Tangled up in Blue. Those were the first songs I could really play the best. All that summer I spent scratching down lyrics in my shabby old notebook. I learned alot that summer, it was one of my favorites. After finishing a Bachelor's in Studio Art at Humboldt State, I moved back down to the Ventura Area. The past five years has been a sharp learning curve. I've been playing out around California as a solo act, or a combination of Ventura's most stellar musicians. In October of 2001, I released my debut CD "Lucky Like Me" co-produced by Jonathan Raffetto.

    Press Reviews
Lucky like Rachel By Bill Locey, Correspondent - Ventura County Star October 11, 2001 Groovy, Cool and Clutch is not a law firm, but rather a few of the adjectives that will probably be uttered by those who attend Rachel Sedacca's CD release party Saturday night at the Ojai House. A Deadhead come to life, Sedacca has assembled a number of the best local players to record her album, "Lucky Like Me," and also to play at this gig. Six members of the Jonathan Raffetto Band is a good thing, trust me. Sedacca has a pleasing voice, which quickly becomes obvious on her nine-song debut CD. It's a modest, folk-flavored affair with some great picking by one of the best acoustic guitar players in these parts, Jonathan Raffetto himself, who also produced the album. Those who have been around for awhile will remember Sedacca as the lead singer for the folk-rock group Calliope. Since the Grateful Dead and their successors, Phish, have gone away, all the Deadheads have not been left spinning aimlessly about and circling the drain. Sedacca, for example, is certainly doing stuff, and recently she discussed some of it. So did you get lucky? Yeah, I'm damn lucky. Someone told me that I was lucky to have done so many fun things. I lived in a school bus and went to school up in Humboldt and I traveled and I just wrote it. Are you still living in a bus? No, I'm living in a house in Ojai, but I just bought a bus, a 1971 GMC -- it's totally converted. It sleeps nine. It has a bathroom and a kitchen, heating, air conditioning and a shower. I'm going to have my school bus -- her name is Louise -- at my CD release party. How long have you been singing? I've been singing all my life, but I just got a guitar in '94, and I really started playing music more seriously after that. I was on the Dead tour up in Humboldt and someone gave me a guitar. Calliope played once in awhile at Cafe Voltaire, right? Yeah, and before that, I did some vocals for a band called Full Sun up in Humboldt, but I was more of a backup singer and not the main deal. Tell me about the new album. This album is the culmination of the last four years of songwriting. It has a real variety of different styles. People always ask me what kind of music I play. I'd like to says it's like mountain sounds ... it's a little bit of everything because that's how I am. I'm a little bit hippie, a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll. I like blues and Motown -- it's a little bit of everything. It's kind of hard to say what kind of music I play because I really wouldn't want to be called just folk, you know? So what are Rachel songs about? Rachel songs are about growth and life in general. Tell me about that hot band on your album. Well, Raffetto produced it; and yeah, I'm lucky to have them all on there and I'm glad they all were able to participate in the project. It was recorded at Table Top Studios, which is Orest Balaban's place on the avenue in Ventura. What's this show going to be like? I'm going to be accompanied by Jonathan McEuen, Orest Balaban, Charlie Benton and Hippie Mark, but no Raffetto -- he'll be in Humboldt. It'll be from 6:30 to 9:30. The Ojai House is like a newsstand and gift store with a big deck out in the back. It holds about 100 people. Do you have three hours worth of stuff? Yeah. I'll be playing all kinds of different stuff; a lot of my favorite songs. I'll probably do three sets. You've been around for awhile. What do you think of the local scene? I think we've got some great musicians around here, some really talented folks. It's a really good music community with a lot of mutual respect within. So what's the plan after this party? The next step is to kind of stretch out outside of Ventura County, and get the bus rolling. I'd like to plan a West Coast tour, which is kind of my short, long-term goal, and then we'll see. I'd like to get on the festival circuit over the summer. I'm a Deadhead, you know? I go to a lot of festivals. Since there's no more Dead and no more Phish, now what? There's the High Sierra Music Festival and all sorts of bluegrass festivals. There's just a whole festival circuit -- it's huge right now. How do you handle all those groupies hitting on you all the time? Are there groupies hitting on me all the time? Let me know, I haven't noticed. Let me know if you see any. The singer-songwriter performs 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ojai House, 304 N. Montgomery St., Ojai. Tickets are $5, or $15 with the purchase of a CD. Call 640-1656 for information.
