Babydriver plays loud and hard for Auburn fans By Brooke McCarley - Staff Writer December 05, 2002 Loud and abrasive could be the easiest way to sum up Babydriver. When they play, it is common to see pools of beer and bottles lying around. With three guitars at high volume, they are anything but soft, and every now and then, they are not even in tune. After playing for two years and going through three drummers and several different line-ups, they have found their niche that fits the style of music they play, a sort of garage rock 'n' roll sound. The band was started two years ago by Joey Parker, lead vocalist and guitarist, and Steve Rowe, guitarist. The two asked Dave Nall to join and play bass. Eventually, Nall moved to guitar and Steve Moberly joined the band to play bass and give the band the three-guitar-loud sound they were searching for. Denys Hemen is the fourth drummer to join the band. "With the addition of Denys Hemen, we sound a lot more rock 'n' roll," Moberly said. With crazy antics and powerful rock 'n' roll riffs, the band has grown to be one of Auburn's favorites. Babydriver always knows how to bring the crowd out and get people into the music. They played one of their favorite shows in Auburn was played at the Coffee House Cafe. "There were a lot of people and the crowd was really into everything and every band," Nall said. "There was a great response." Though the members of Babydriver have diverse musical tastes, they come together to create a solid sound. "We have a lot of different influences, and everybody has input for each song," Moberly said. "It adds so much." Moberly said he grew up listening to metal bands like Black Sabbath. "I grew up listening to glam rock," Parker said. "Bands like Kiss, Poison, Motley Crue and even Nelson." Parker said he has been playing guitar for more than eight years. "I love playing music, and I love playing in front of people," Parker said. Rowe, who said he grew up listening to glam rock, rap and pop, agreed with Parker. "It's better than any normal day-job," Rowe said. Moberly got his start by playing the up-right bass at age 7. "I have been playing since I was tiny," he said. "When I played the upright bass I had to get on a stool to play it." Babydriver has played in Mobile, Atlanta and Birmingham. They have also taken an extensive tour where they played from Knoxville to New York. Currently, they have shows set to play in Auburn and are working on another tour. In spring, they are set to record with Go Kart Records, a label that has featured punk-rock groups such as Anti-flag and Drop Murphy's. Since playing in Auburn, Babydriver has shared the stage with bands from big punk labels such as Lookout Records, Subpop and Sympathy for the Music Industry. As for the future, they said they plan to keep playing and making strides in the music world. "I want to keep playing and see how far we can go," Moberly said.
