Silencer loud, proud, based in Brookfield

Multi-colored Christmas lights illuminate Scott Frosch’s Brookfield
basement. Watchful eyes from a Sepultura poster and an army of defeated
skateboards play audience while Silencer conducts bi-weekly band practice.
The Brookfield-based trio specializes in British and ’80s-inspired hard
rock, and performs tonight at Cousin Larry’s Cafe in Danbury.
Silencer, playing together only a year, has accomplished quite a lot.
Performing all over Fairfield County, the band has been at venues such as Manchester’s Equator club and Fairfield’s Green Room. They also have scored high-profile slots at WestConn’s Westfest with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and last month’s Gasball music festival on the Danbury Green. To round out its busy year, Silencer just released a five-song CD titled, “The High Life”.
Joining drummer Frosch are Brookfield’s John Lucas, on guitar and vocals, and Hartford’s Steve Watson on bass. The musicians cite The Smiths and Modern English among their influences. Lucas delivers catchy lyrics in a strong, grainy, angst-filled voice that plays well against the dreamy, distortion-ridden guitar and bass.
Their 1980’s influence is apparent in Silencer’s alluring mix of slow and fast beats, hard and soft vocals. Part of Silencer’s appeal lies in its straightforwardness. You’ll find no trends or gimmicks here, no costumes or synchronized dance moves. The music does the talking and it’s not a speech you’ll soon forget. The guys leave the dancing to their fans.
If Silencer is guilty of any musical crime, it could be the occasional
cliche lyric. But when dealing with universal concepts like love, loss, and uncertainty — what hasn’t been said before? For the most part they speak in a universally appealing voice that fears no decibel. Silencer is loud, so loud Frosch says, that club owners have asked them to quiet down on several occasions.
Aside from eardrum abuse, the guys share a love of all kinds of music and talk about bands constantly; Frosch warns that he could, “talk about death metal all night.” Another dear topic to the guys is tattoos. Watson boasts an entire arm and Frosch is working from the legs up. Someday, the guys will be works of art instead of performing them.
But for now, music is their main focus, and with song titles like “Stayed Up Late” and “1 A.M.”, it’s obvious they put in a lot of overtime. Their efforts don’t go unappreciated either, judging by their loyal following at the venues downtown. Silencer especially likes playing smaller clubs like Hat City Ale House in Danbury and Cousin Larry’s Cafe, where it performed its first show. Why those places? Good acoustics and good attitudes, said band members.
