Artist History
In 1991 the group Culturas Mixtas was formed. The singer songwriter Luis Angulo and brother Oscar Angulo went initially through a number of bands and drummers playing mostly remakes of cover tunes in local bars around San Diego and Tijuana. Tired of playing covers, the Angulo brothers started searching for drummers to form an original band before they found their third important member Eddie Sabogal who was to remain for the rest of the trios short carrier.
The group soon settled in the guitarist songwriters home in San Diego CA. and converted the garage into a recording studio with Eddie as the recording enginieer, where they quickly proceeded to put down their original ideas into tape. The band then provided a demo with an interesting mixture of late 60īs and 70īs with an alternative sound, influenced by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Donovan, Santana and Roxy Music. The dark and underground cutting edge sound were accompanied with the singer sonwriters lyrics which were based on love, despair and even politcal issues.
The trio started performing in local venues in San Diego Ca.as well as cultural gatherings in cities along the border of Mexico. But being from latinamerica and writing lyrics in english presented the band with an akward feeling and they soon started to write in two languages for both audiences.
The band started off as an underground progressive band but slowly moved away from the shadows into the sunlight with more dance oriented shorter and catchy tunes in spanish but without loosing their hard cutting edge sound, often supported live by a fourth member on percussion, to lay down the essential latin grooves needed.
It was not long before they started getting recognition and a reputation in the underground scene as the best band in Baja California. They enter a number of contests gaining audiences and soon tours and recording plans were offered.Unfortunately tension and personal problems grew among the members and the band finally disbanned in 1994 leaving a handful of unreleased beautiful and powerful songs.
Now after 10 years the band is reforming under the name Culturas Ocultas and are currently busy remastering their old but still fresh sounding material which you can already listen here and which will be released soon in the future. Stay tuned!
