Artist description With a 2,048 x 4,096-pixel detector, the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager captures high-resolution spectra of very faint galaxies and quasars ranging from the blue to the infrared in a single exposure. ESI can also be configured to permit lower- resolution spectra of several objects simultaneously or to record direct images of extremely faint sources. ESI is a relatively "simple" yet extremely versatile addition to the Observatory's instrument complement.
