Artist History
A native of the country of Iceland, Gis, (pronounced "geese"), has been touring Southern California clubs for the past 3 years. Gis has been honing his talents as lead singer, rhythm guitarist, writer, and entertainer in the band Big City. Big City has become known for its strong musicianship, original material, and high-energy performances throughout Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
The venues where Gis has appeared with Big City include the most respected country music clubs in greater Los Angeles, including: The Cowboy Palace in Chatsworth, The Brandin' Iron in San Bernardino, Crazy Jack's in Burbank and The Borderline in Thousand Oaks.
Gis's first CD, "Bring Me You," was released independently in August, 2002. The CD has been selling steadily wherever Big City has appeared in California. The 'Bring Me You' Summer Tour 2002 in Iceland was a major success, where Gis and Big City played to packed clubs and outdoor festivals. In addition, Gis and the band performed live to the entire nation on both television and radio. Songs from the CD continue to be played on National Iceland Radio, and a new CD of original material is slated for release in July, 2003.
Many have asked why Gis, born and raised so far from the American South, is such a believable country singer and songwriter. The answer is quite simple. First, Gis grew up in a strong musical environment. His father is a well-known singer in Iceland. Apart for his love for the sound of today's country music, the influences of traditional country music reach far beyond the borders of the USA. Much like Australian country star Keith Urban, Gis spent his teenage, cover-band years playing songs by artists such as Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash. Today, Gis combines the themes of traditional country and the energy and production of contemporary country in a memorable way.
Although Gis is very proud of his Icelandic heritage, he is firmly rooted in American country music. Seen wearing his Stetson on the streets of LA, folks stop to chat and inevitably ask if Gis is a Southern name...
You can find out just how unique Gis is by exploring the various links on this site. Invariably, you'll find that Gis's journey from Iceland to the American West has made him a "Native Son" of both countries.
