Artist description
Dana Kelley was born in boston, massachusetts. After being introduced to the fine arts at the age of 9 through the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts, Dana excelled in music theory. The music director, recognizing his talents, introduced him to the violin. Dana studied as a Suzuki violin student, African percussion, clarinet, and recorder. At the age of thirteen, Dana graduated top honors from the school receiving numerous awards for music, and drama. Dana furthered studied art at the Museum school of Fine arts, where he was introduced to electronic music and House music. An unfortunate accident put Dana’s studies on hold for 2 years, and he quietly continued working with electronica. In 1988, Dana purchased his first professional keyboard/sampler. Dana was drawn to NYC, and the Paradise Garage. Dana was encouraged to send a demo tape to Strictly Rhythm in 1994, since the music that influenced him for the last several years was House music. Dana was immediately signed by Strictly with his first release “Got to Get Up” under the guise of “Krimp” and DKMA productions. The unique blend of house Dana brought to Strictly instantly brought him praises from Louis Vega, Armand Van Helden, and many other top house Dj’s looking for original dance tracks. Dana and Strictly Rhythm discovered that a bass line was sampled from “in the spirit”, which was influential in the UK speed garage scene. Dana continued to work with domestic and foreign labels like Guidance Records, Large, Forensic, and many others wanting the unique bass line driven tracks. Soon, many deep house DJ’s were introduced to Dana’s heavy bass line driven tracks like “Need ur Love” on Guidance Records.
Currently, Dana is working on various projects for tv, film, and video games like Smuggler’s Run. for Sony Playstation 2. An album is also in the works featuring various material from spoken word artist, vocalist, and musicians from the Boston area.
Dana’s passion dujour is soft synths, sound design, and animation. Dana is also performing live at various venues, stay tuned for listings. When he is not working on music, Dana’s enjoys biking, weightlifting, and grilling in his small Roxbury home. |

Press Reviews
Callisto-"Need UR Love"-Guidance
"Need Ur Love" zeigt Guidance wieder mal von seiner besten Seite, ganz gleich ob ihr euch fur die polternd in dustere Tiefen vordringenden Stalafmiten oder den Garage-Swing des "Stalagtite Mix" entscheidet. Auch das auf Fusionpfaden wandelnde "The Groove" entwickelt mit seiner stolpernden Babtrommel den notigen Charm.

Callisto-"The Cimmerian"-Guidance
Number 11 on the Guidance label and again in their typical jazzy style, the highlight for me on this four tracker is "The Cimmerian", Mood II Swing in style, a warm Rhodes bass backed by strings and a haunting horn melody making it strangely moving, old school style.

Callisto-Need UR Love/ The Cimmerian-Guidance/US/12
Without a doubt, Guidance has become one of the true front runners of cutting edge house music. These two twelve inches are no exception. All have the right stuff as far as basic house cuts that can move the floor, but in typical Guidance fashion, they have unique properties that put them ahead, like the discoey "Charly Brown". And for those of you who are into that Kerri Chandler style bassline, then listen to "Callisto", because it does deliver. No big surprise, all have the phat cutting edge Chicago sound that is a must. Don't be lame, check these records out.

Callisto-"Need UR Love"-Guidance
Deep house has become such a sliding signifier that it can be taken to mean almost anything. Boston producer Dana Kelley is interested in keeping the spirit of deep house intact while making tracks that are perfectly suited to the demands of dancefloors that have never experienced Frankie Knuckles or the Paradise Garage. This is why Kelley is the most progressive house producer in the US right now. He's no blueprint revivalist, yet he insists on keeping the deep groove pools running while creating resolutely contemporary sounds. Kelley's recent EP for the now highly esteemed Guidance organization is another barn-burner. The title track comes in two versions: "The Stalagmite Mix" and "The Stalagtite Mix", each making clear that you'd better hang onto your hat or your boots, because these tracks make their assault from every angle. "The Cimmerian" on the flip is a lush, deeply-bassed number with more compressed energy than a supernova. Outstanding.

Callisto-"Paradigm EP"-Guidance
Good deep house has certainly not taken a summer vacation, as evidenced by two smoking sets of tracks released by the ever-reliable Guidance label. Callisto is the operating name of Dana Kelley, a Guidance regular who actually turns his hand to drum 'n' bass-inflected house on the furious "Junkle I" and "Junkle II" on his new record, the sparkling Paradigm EP.

Callisto Nether World EP (Guidance 038)
Chill-Out ‘98.

Callisto - Netherworld EP - Guidance
Dark deep house music. “Breezin’” is a dark building track with a deep mean bassline and hi-hat driven groove. Perhaps what it sounds like raving in a cavern filled with bats. “Bounce” starts off with a filter break beat and percussion, then builds into a nice pumpin’ house groove with subtle jazzy sounds. “Meta” is similar, with housey percussion and synth pads to an older Callisto track “I Need UR Love”. Dana Kelly’s got a good thing going with this release.

A truly hypnotic slice of percussive house with more balls than a heard of stampeding Buffalo, and chunkier than the entire contents of a Cornish fishermans wardrobe. Bring it on guys!

“Can't Turn Around”
DKMA feat. La-Forne Hope
Sugardish
This sexy, souful house offering definitely has the right stuff for mass dancefloor consumption. Three excellent mixes are included, as are the outstanding vocal talents of newcomer La-Forne Hope, who really stretches out on this cut. Of the three mixes, check the extra-long dub on the B-side, which offers a deep, edgy groove with an absolutely wicked synth hook – very, very nasty. This mix alone will work the crowd. Do not sleep on this one.
