Artist description
With guitar, no-holds-barred drums/percussion, lightning sampling, colossal ambient washes and more, this is the music that your boss does not want you listening to. It is engaging. It is the voices of the hidden spirits in your head that challenge you to venture to that deep end. This is your doorway to those environments traversed in your weirdest dreams-the ones that leave you feeling utterly astounded. |

Artist History
Raw Computer is the culmination of 6 years of reflection and repair after the decision to close the chapter of the Outpatients*(the hardcore band also here at mp3.com! ). My younger brother/bassist, Scott, went on to explore his own musical career and I decided to take a long needed rest from the affairs of heading a band. I resumed my studies at Hunter College in psychology, philosophy and art.
I had been creating sound collages like "Towards a New Beginning/Still Untainted Morning" (Outpatients-Test of Time, 1993) as early as 1979 on reel-to-reel tape machines. In fact, a tape machine was the first "amplifier" I played an electric guitar through back in '78. I first heard Kraftwerk's "Man Machine" album this same year and was to be fascinated by Skinny Puppy's "Vivisect" a decade later. 1990 marked my introduction to drum programming, and sound engineering on multitrack recorders. At first this was just an aid to writing for the Outpatients but by 1995 I found myself exploring synth programming. The music and percussion for Big Guess came from this period. I found myself face to face with an immense musical effect that I instinctively knew I could ride with. My "studio" at this time consisted of a 4-track, drum machine, synth and a compressor (and my guitar of course). In 1999 I made the decision to learn how to operate a computer as I was, at that point, perhaps a bit too "old school!" Both Channels and Winter were written and recorded that year. Unfortunately, all the original tracks for these songs and about 10 others were lost in my first hard drive crash. The album versions of Big Guess, Channels and Winter, were salvaged from rough mixes that I'd backed up beforehand. I lost most of the others. I had 2 other major meltdowns before I resolved to build my own, ever growing, computer. My writing and artwork have coincided with a rigorous processing of data from school, New York City, the past, you name it, it's all on the download.
This record dispels the myths of a sterile, digital accuracy. On the contrary, the digital realm becomes the tool to augment the expansive human expressiveness, and echo its mystery. Raw Computer flies in the face of stubborn purism that seeks to preserve some analogue/digital dichotomy. I invite you to experience this mind vehicle that represents the sonic victory I had always envisioned. |
