Artist History
Singing Career:
Barring playing for India as Goal-keeper in Hockey and winning the Gold Medal at the World Olympics held in Wembley, London in the year 1948, Leo at an young age had a beautiful and powerful singing voioe and was an automatic choice in Church Choir singing. In Antonio D'Souza High School at Byculla besides his school and sports activities he took an active part in dramatics and excelled as a Singer in competitions organised by them.
After completing matriculation from St. Stanislaus High School, Bandra, in 1932, Leo joined St. Xavierls College. During this time he was very popular. Besides his studies, taking active part in sports as well as a Singer and a musician. On 31st July being the Feast Day of the College, Leo always participated in the musical programmes organised by the College , by either singing Solos, playing the Hawaiian Guitar or doing a tap dance. Leo has sung over the All-India Radio in a programme organised by them. Leo took part in several Operattas and Solo singing organised by the Bandra Dramatics Association.
Leo sung for the Bombay Philharmonic Choir his favourite: "Danny Boy" at the Bombay Town Hall under Cecil Mendoza. Leo was very popular in singing his favouite songs "Danny Boy, Ave Maria, Trees, Because, La Donna E Mobile, Goan Folk Songs etc. During his services in the Sir Allwyn Ezra Services Canteen, he entertained the British and American Troops with his singing in sveral programmes organized by Mr. Harry Potter at the Bombay Town Hall, Wesley Hall, Y.M.C.A. Club etc. Leo was a member of the Mount Carmel Church Choir, Bandra Gleehive Choral Group and was outstanding in his singing. Leo on his tours with the Indian Hockey team to East Africa ubder the Captainship of. Dhyan Chand in I947/48 and the Tata Hookey team in I952 delighted audiences with his 6010 singing and rendition of the Goan Folk Songs. He was also featured in the Nairobi Air Broadcasting programme. In 1969/70, Leo went as Manager with the Tata Hockey Team on a Good-will Hockey tour to Ceylon. Here he was a big success both as Manager as well as a Singer. The whole Tata team sang over the Ceylon Radio the popular Mando Goan Folk numbers. Leo has sung in London, Calcutta, Madras, Jullunder, Punjab, Lucknow and Delhi during his hockey tours. He aways stood first in the talent Competitions organised by the Mount Carmel's Church. |
