    Artist description
Contemporary folk with a pop edge {think Alison Krauss & Union Station meets Barenaked Ladies!} From the honest and introspective story telling of folk to the savvy hooks and craftsmanship of pop music; the vocal harmonies from country and gospel music to the soul and rhythm of music from far away lands like Ireland and Africa; add the sophisticated harmony and walking bass lines of jazz... and you get the "eclectic and sublime" acoustic sound that Tangerine Trousers has dubbed "Folkrockoustic". All this wrapped into a high energy live show that'll knock your 'trousers' off! Each of the 6 members who make up the 'fabric' of the Tangerine Trousers are as unique as the music they create, covering instruments from acoustic guitar, upright bass, accordion, flute, mandolin, lap steel, dobro, harmonica, saxophone, musical saw, bells, whistles, drums & percussion, and multi-layered vocal harmonies to soothe even the most savage beast. Entertainment is an equally important focus for the band, and the audiences are always left smiling! The bands' latest recording, Far Above Rubies, earned a nomination from the 2002 Detroit Music Awards for "Oustanding Acoustic/Folk Recording" and was named one of the "10 Best Folk Recordings of 2002" by The Current Magazine in Ann Arbor, MI. John and C J Milroy also earned nominations for "Outstanding Folk Songwriters" which ,along with John's nomination for "Outstanding Acoustic/Folk Instrumentalist," brings the total DMA nominations for the group to 12. The Trousers had a busy summer of 2002 headlining festivals across Michigan, including the Muskegon Summer Celebration, Blissfest Music Festival, Hiawatha Music Festival, and Riverfolk Music Festival, as well as the Comerica TasteFest in Detroit and the Arts, Beats, and Eats Festival in Pontiac. TANGERINE TROUSERS released their 2nd CD, "Dressed for Success" on june 21st, 2003. It was recorded in Ann Arbor, and with CHRIS STAMEY at Modern Recording {Ryan Adams, Michael Stipe, Caitlin Carey ...} in Chapel Hill, NC.

    Press Reviews
THE DETROIT FREE PRESS - June, 2003 - A ROOTSY SOUND AND GREAT MELODIES - Some roots records have a tendency to be rootsy to a flaw -- melody takes a backseat to making sure everything sounds really really real. Not so with Tangerine Trousers, who with "Dressed for Success" solidify themselves as one of the area's top Americana-styled acts, mining classic pop, country, folk and more to delightful effect. The neatest trick is that nearly every song on this 10-track collection has an instantly memorable, hummable quality, the kind of stuff that leaves you begging for another spin. Much of the credit goes to frequent lead singer CJ Milroy, whose voice is an earthy and slightly playful instrument, even on songs that might seem to call for a little more melancholy. Standout tunes where she carries the day include the gently catchy, got-to-get-out-of-this-place number "Sycamore Bay," the appropriately titled "Beautiful Thing" and the wistful "Daddy's Girl." But this is far from a one-woman show. John Milroy (guitars, mandolin, banjo), Mark Iannace (accordion, percussion), Patrick Shanley (guitar, Dobro), Michael Hacala (percussion) and Luke Sayers (bass) have an obvious communication that ensures they are right whenever they need to be, and they also nail some very sweet harmonies. From top to bottom, this is an engaging record from an excellent ensemble that is helped by several big-name guests, including Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown), John Keane (who has worked with R.E.M.) and Chris Stamey of the dB's. ........By Steve Byrne, Free Press staff writer............................ THE CURRENT MAGAZINE - Ann Arbor, MI - December 2002 TOP 10 FOLK RECORDINGS OF 2002 by Twila Oxley Price TANGERINE TROUSERS "Far Above Rubies" (self-released, 2001). Fun local band Tangerine Trousers gives a fantastic live show and puts some of that magic into this album. Far Above Rubies showcases their eclectic instrumentation, their stunning vocal virtuosity and their unusual songwriting.
