EXCLAIM MAGAZINE - HANDS AND KNEES MUSIC
Sparrow has come a long way from his debut album on Noisefactory, The Beauty of Strangeness, this time introducing complex rhythmic layers but understating them as not to overshadow the other sounds. Drenched in atmospheric sweeps, this album encompasses a variety of emotions, articulating his music with a cinematic flair. Though every tune on this album is just about perfect, "I remember it all", "Robin Hood" and "Slower than you think" are among my favorites. "I remember it all" opens up with a tidal wave of synth lines then followed by a hail of rhythms. "Robin Hood" has the sweet charm of a child who slowly awakens from slumber, gazes about the room and discovers it is full of presents -- the sound of youthful laughter -- the music then gently unfurls into an expression of joy. "Slower than you think" is the opus piece, which utilises elements of the entire album to form a thematic reprise, offering a satisfying closure. From the chillingly eerie to the sweetly sentimental, Sparrow Orange is undergoing a metamorphosis in technique and I look forward to new developments on his next album. It's always exciting to come across a musician who is actively growing in a way that is actually enjoyable to listen. - I. Khider
ELECTROAGE - THE BEAUTY OF STRANGNESS
Oscillating between a sci-fi soundtrack and a futuristic lullaby, The Beauty of Strangeness, from the mysterious Sparrow Orange (we know nothing about him, her or them), is an ambitious expedition into an unknown, beautiful abyss.
Displaying the perfection of sound, their debut EP is build around humming electronics, ambient synth lines and subtle technoid beats where some shy speech samples sometime makes their intrusion. The precise calculation of their experimental structure is outstanding; the attention is demand and then, the music drowns you into the majesty of dreams. At each listening, The Beauty of Strangeness is reveling one more element, another secret of its musical subtlety and let you run through the whole process of exploring its content over and over again. A timeless soundtrack where there's no end.
At the same time with an intricate precision and a deliberate structure, The Beauty of Strangeness is an engaging piece of intelligent electronic music; an exquisite gift to the mind and ears where music is truly beyond the words. With this brilliant debut, Sparrow Orange is creating a powerful landscape where technoid and ambient show no borders. A strange and seductive beauty. Excellent. - Finalman
GRINDING INTO EMPTINESS - THE BEAUTY OF STRANGNESS
There is one word to describe the band Sparrow Orange and that is "Atmosphere". Not the kind of atmosphere you will find in a specifically eerie episode of The X-Files but the kind of atmosphere that conjures images and emotions. This 6 track cd is another fine release from the Canadian label Noise Factory. A label which is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The first track, "Sponge City", starts off with a dismal, bleak repeating sample of a distorted voice but progresses into a layer of melody that can be compared to the likes of Kitaro. The songs structures are unique in the method of the piece not starting like the piece ends. The only vocals in these recordings are sampled from various sources. They are not sampled from other songs but from unique and unknown sources. Possibly stolen dialog from a long forgotten art film.
The cd as a whole may conjure the comparisons of film soundtracks... or at least artist known for scoring films such as Angelo Badalamenti or even In The Nursery. Sparrow Orange can disturb and enlighten the listener at the same time. When other artist deliver music similar to this to insist on using lyrics and song but Sparrow Orange only use subtle atmosphere. I think it's best said with the only three words that grace the inner sleeve, which are "Open Your Mind". Well done.
