Artist History
R22 from Long Island, NY started back in 1995 between Dan (drums, vocals) and Rob (bass). Dan wrote the first few songs on guitar and recorded it all with a nifty 4-track. The two put a few songs together,Dan playing drums and guitar and Rob playing bass, but they needed someone who could put lyrics and vocals to the music. In early 96' it came time to call upon Alex (vocals), whom they had worked with before,in a band called Salvation's End. The vocals were then layed down and R22 became a 3-piece, but couldn't play any shows without a guitar player. The trio tried out a few different guitar players, but no one reallyseemed to fit the mold. Matt (guitars, vocals), also ex-Salvation's End, was then asked to join the group in late 96'. Salvation's End was reunited, but elevated to a higher groove, new enthusiasm, and moreaggressive motivation...R22. Instead of just your generic screams and growls...melodies and vocal harmonies were then utilized. For the next two years R22 played numerous amounts of live shows in the tri-statearea, put out a few demos and recenlty released their debut album. In mid 99' Pete ex-guitarist of the band Entorturement had joined the R22 force. Thickening up the already heavy sound. R22, a band with nolimitations. With influences from: Faith No More, Incubus, Napalm Death, The Beatles, Pantera, Meshuggah, Brutal Truth, Seal, and many diverse others gives R22 an edge that other bands dream of. Now in2000, R22 has grown to a supreme level of intensity, the group is reaching audiences that span out to the widest variety imaginable. Now with their debut album "a picture is worth 1000 lies", R22 will surely growinto something never heard or seen before. As of June 8th, Matt decided to leave the band, and shorly after that Rob and the band both felt it would be better to part ways. Since then R22 has found a newmember to take Rob's place on the bass. John Ferrara from bayside is the young string slapper from hell, and that's all I have to say about that. This still leaves R22 on the search for a new guitar player and/orkeyboard player to join this creative force. Having played with bands such as: Machine Head, Tree, Hatebreed, Candiria, E-Town Concrete, Amorphis, Puya, Snapcase, Suicidal Tendencies and many, manymore. R22 will spread like an infectious disease. It's only a matter of time. Be prepared. |

Press Reviews
"R22 is an amazing hardcore/metal act from LongIsland, NY. There are three elements vocally tothis band. There is the vocal growl, sounding moreanimal than human, there is the melodic singing, and there is the rough holler. These three vocalstyles are intertwined to form one style thatsuits R22 fine. Dan uses the double bass on thedrum effectively, causing a beat that is franticand extremely heavy. When Alex sings, he almosthas a Life of Agony quality to his voice, whichcan quickly change to the growl that sounds likeCannibal Corpse. Some of the outside elementsencorporated into this release are unexpected,a sales commercial, indian chants, a sample fromBatman, it's all here. R22 is a band that shouldbe heard, they are talented and articulate...anamateur Meshuggah at times. Subconscious Regret is quite possibly the most marketable song, oneof my favorites too. This song is straight upalternative, except it is totally distorted intoheavy R22 style. In this "cold world" we live in,R22 can warm you up, and get you ready to kicksome ass." Rating: 4 (1 being the worst, 5 being the best)- Eradicator, Planet Noise (www.planet-noise.com)Take the vocals of Internal Bleeding, the spastic stop/start grooves of Korn, the harmonic thrash of(Belladonna-era) Anthrax a dash of Life of Agony, and an occasional Mike Patton-influenced vocal line and youhave this rather strange band called R22. Significantly heavy(certainly heavier than any of the above sans IB) and quite original despite their recycling ethic of various rock/metal genres, on paper this just doesn’tseem like it would work. There is however a very eerie depth to this album. The songs sound like they link together though they don’t really. Hearing a crushing death metal riff(with thudding double bass) over aheavy groove, laced with a melancholy vocal in the vein of early Smashing Pumpkins (!!!!) is a fucking earful you could say, and this sequence makes up for about 10 seconds of one song. “Picture Perfect” is theone being described here, and later in the track there is a distant acoustic part, more heavy grooves, a little rapping, and more melancholy “clean” vocals. Heavy and heavy on intrigue, this is some original shit. Thebattle between radio-friendly hard rock and death metal is downright nasty, I must admit. The hip hop influence could be enough to turn off some people despite the brutality of the death metal vocals, though at thesame time those with short attention spans will appreciate the way R22 shift gears nearly every 10 seconds. “E.F.F.” is a perfect example of R22’s multi-metal attack; the swirling sadness and anger laced with ahardcore frustration, while the death metal parts represents nothing but pure anger and hate. If that’s not enough, a surreal ambient drone hovers in the background, simmering R22’s bizarre post-metal stew. Withouta doubt an album you’ll find something new in every next listen. A cold fusion of many different styles of heavy rock. 54:45 89/100. |
