Artist History
Stanley Jason Zappa
initially studied guitar and acoustic bass, performing in school, city and state youth orchestras.
At Bennington College the switch was made to the Baritone Saxophone while studying under Bill Dixon and Milford Graves. While at Bennington College, Mr. Zappa organized weekly performances in the "cafe" space featuring groups from trios to tentets. Mr. Zappa is still in touch with Bill Dixon and has recently written a liner essay at Bill Dixon's request for a forth coming retrospective of his (Bill Dixon's) solos. After Bennington, Mr. Zappa moved to New York City where he was a founding member of the "Improvisors Collective" (led by Patricia Parker, now organizer of the NYC Vision Festival).
While in NYC Mr. Zappa played most regularly with Rashid Bakr (Cecil Taylor, Other Dimensions in Music), performing at the Knitting Factory, the Stork Festival (NYC) and the 30th Anniversary of the October Revolution in Music (Vermont).
Through his association with Mr. Bakr, Mr. Zappa had the opportunity to play with William Parker, Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter, Jameel Moondoc, Cooper Moore (David S. Ware Group, In Order to Survive), Marco Eneidi, Jackson Krall (Cecil Taylor Quartet), Dan O'Brien and John Blum. On occasion, Mr. Zappa also performed a number of times at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Cambridge MA as a special guest with Lawrence Cook (Bill Dixon Quartet), Craig Schultower and Eric Zinneman.
Mr. Zappa has been living in Portland for 2 years and in that time has been performing with Asa Metric and Jean Paul Jenkins (whom Mr. Zappa has been colaborating with for the past 8 years).
JeanPaul Jenkins
has performed in many different New Music situations over the past 8 years. He is very influenced by Contemporary Classical Music, Modern "Free Music" and Country & Western. As an adjunct to playing guitar he also pursues electronic music with the aid of drum-machines, keyboards and samplers. His style might be described as a percussive pan-tonal amalgam of rock and jazz textures.
Asa Metric
a musician of 12 years and multi-instrumentalist, performing on drums and percussion in this group. Mr Metric studied initially with Peter Simonson of Des Moines, IA and later studied drums and percussion at the Musicians Collective in New York City in 1996.
Asa has been working with Jason Zappa since 1997, when they first perfomed in New York City at the Knitting Factory with pianist John Blum and bassist Matthew Heyner. In addition to performances and recordings with this quartet, Metric also is the bassist and turntablist in Portland's multimedia dance band, The Sensualists.
Avalon Kalin
has played informally in jazz and free-music combos in both Portland and Seattle. He has played out in both cities as both a bass player, alto-sax player, and a performer of self-composed electronic music.
Erik Bauer studied trumpet @ Bennington College under Bill Dixon and Raphe Malik (Cecil Taylor Unit). Bauer also composed, recorded, and produced studio/electronic music scores for dance. Performed with The Raphe Malik Big Band and Reggie Workman in Vermont & Massachusetts, in Chicago with drummer Matt Weston, and has been working with JAJA (after getting back in touch with Jenkins & Zappa) since the fall of 1998, when he moved to Seattle.
Principal Performances with this group include the Knitting Factory NYC, Aural Fixation Series, 5th Ave Cinemas (accompanying the Stan Brakhage's 1987 silent film "The Loom") and the Mt. Tabor Acoustic Theatre. |
