Artist History
At the end of the night, when the crowds have parted and the club is emptied, all that really matters in the honesty of the music the band played. Rock and roll music is, in its idyllic form, the music of youth; it carries with it all of the rage, lust, and pathos of life. A band’s stage show, if the band holds on to this concept of earnestness, should reflect the emotional intensity of the songs they write. One band that strives to achieve and maintain this honesty is Charlotte, NC’s Ten Missing Days.
The four-piece self-described “wuss metal” band consists of Tim Cossor on drums, Brooks Bevil on guitar, Matt Ross on bass, and Will Gilreath on vocals/guitar. Ten Missing Days has opted for a stripped down approach to their sound and has eschewed multitudes of guitar effects that they feel can pollute the music. Their efforts to keep their music and the feelings behind them pure are evident in their performances and have gained them a loyal following.
Local leaders such as Sckapegoat, Evolving Silence, A Closing Skyline, Clout, The Paris Centerfold, Near the Never, and One Six Conspiracy are all counted as peers. The group won an opening slot for national recording artists Cold in 2001.
Their first E.P., “numb” was released the summer of 2002, and consisted of the straight hard rock music that got the band attention when they began playing serious shows in early 2001. For a follow-up full-length album, the band expanded musically and lyrically, with progression and maturation in mind. The songs became more complex and thus more musically interesting while still maintaining a sense of good songcraft that can be lost on bands that concentrate too heavily on technical virtuosity. Taking inspiration from acts like Helmet and Thursday the group has set about to raise the bar of the local Charlotte hard rock scene with the 2003 release of the new c.d. “Cellar Door.”
At times both gorgeous and violently dissonant, “Cellar Door” is a document of a band coming into its own. If the album has a theme, it’s the myriad effects of relationships with friends, lovers, and enemies. Ten Missing Days are a band that means what they say and the lyrics are meant to be personal catharsis—externalization of internal conflicts.
They are on a quest to play rock music that means something to them, and with good fortune, to the people who buy their records and come see them play. |
