Artist History
Steed, based in Los Angeles and led by
singer/songwriter Aaron Hettler, was created
out of a love for Tom Waits, Neil Young, and
Woody Guthrie, but also bears the marks of pop
and indie-rock (The Pixies’) influence. It is
another’s country music, a country music unique
to a group of young people from Los Angeles.
Comprised of Aaron, James O’Toole (bass and
keyboards), Nick Roberts (drums), and Corina
Apodaca (backup vocals), Steed blends twangy
guitar that moves from simple strumming to
melodic leads; sometimes sparse, sometimes
rich, bell-like keyboards; a solid rhythm
section; and simple yet haunting vocals.
Theirs is a story of LA. Los Angeles’s
inheritance, unfulfilled dreams and promises,
lay at the heart of Aaron’s lyrics. Parents,
children, lovers, and friends move in and out
of lives, and seem to disappear as if never
existing. The only fingerprint left by their
lives is the regret pressed indelibly onto the
left-behind’s world.
Still, hope remains on the periphery of
these lyrics, and the sweetness of much of
the music brings that hope to the forefront.
Steed is the mixing of love for music and
life, a love combining the innocence of pop
music and a first kiss with Country and its
sadnesses.
