Artist description
Baby Stout, the latest offering from cult diva Rebecca Stout is a five piece punk/hip-hop outfit that adds a new chapter to the continuing story of rap and rock n’ roll in the Dirty South.
Baby Stout's rhymes explode out of a fever dream; a dark tour of 21st Century Faulknerian gothic. Baby Stout is fearless, addressing mental illness, pedophilia and civic apathy with an ease that makes you forget you are shaking your booty.
The rhythm section of bassist Pete Cummings (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash), drummer Derek Greene (Grinning Plowman) and guitarist Rev. Asher Dudley lay down a jazz/phunk fusion for Baby and her human beatbox extraordinaire, Camo Davi. |

Artist History
At the tender age of 17, Rebecca Stout’s haunting vocals provided the third instrument to the the ground breaking acoustic goth band The Shakers. The southern goth trio became a Nashville legend over their nine-year run, even outselling Bon Jovi in area record stores.
Stout got her first record deal while still in high school as the lead singer of The Shakers that included drummer Ken Coomer (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco). She first began experimenting with rhyming while performing with her left-of-center 9-piece, jazz-rock ensemble, The Circus Inebrius which featured a rotating roster of musicians like Reggie Wooten and Josh Rouse on guitar as well as long-time drummer Derek Greene. "Beats and bass have always been the focus" Stout says, "Greene and I decided to further expose that with Baby Stout".
Baby Stout made their first live appearance in Nashville in early 2000 nailing fans ever since with their frenetic brand of hick-hop and punk rock.
She explored Appalachian murder ballads, and studying voice with the curators of the Bulgarian Music Inst. in New York and Frank Hart, the champion Irish ballad singer after the Shakers disbanded in 1994 . She’s also the angel voice on Robert Earl Keen’s cracker Christmas classic, “Merry Christmas From The Family”. Her first solo project was the left-of-center 9-piece, jazz-rock ensemble, The Circus Inebrius which featured a rotating roster of musicians like Reggie Wooten and Josh Rouse. Since she had been experimenting with rhyming in the Circus Inebrius, her next project, Baby Stout was a natural progression where she marries rap, funk and punk rock. That’s where Pete met her. Their mutual drummer of choice Derek Greene (Grinning Plowman) brought Pete in to Baby Stout to play bass. Pete is subsequently producing their album.
When mandolin player Robert Logue relocated to Seattle, Stout and guitarist Oscar Rice decided he couldn't be replaced and disbanded the group.
Stout struck out on her own, exploring Appalachian murder ballads, and studying voice with the curators of the Bulgarian women's choir and Frank Hart, the champion Irish ballad singer. She's also the angel voice on Robert Earl Keen's cracker Christmas classic, "Merry Christmas From the Family."
She then formed Circus Inebrius, a wildly eclectic gumbo of her varied influences: Edgar Allen Poe, Billie Holiday and Loretta Lynn. |
