The Benjy Davis Project
More Than Local
(Real Records)
Continuing in the grand ole Southern rock tradition that brought us such luminaries as Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Widespread Panic, Baton Rouge's Benjy Davis Project seem determined to capitalize on every single Southern rock cliché possible, transfixing frat boys from Alabama to Carolina. In fact, the chorus of the second track "The Day That I Die" manages to squeeze most of them together in a tight, easy to digest package. Davis postulates his final hours singing, "We'd be sitting at a bar drinking Coors Light sucking on a fat blunt packed thick rolled tight talking to the fine ass girl sitting right next to me. Starting shit with people that could beat us, writin' songs about it." The rest of the record's lyrics mine similar territory with excursions into the drama of the high school crush, and how-to-eat crawfish manifestos. Musically, Benjy Davis is an acolyte of acoustic based groups like Dave Matthews, Freddie Jones, and balladeer Edwin McCain. As derivative as it is, give Davis credit for being able to construct songs with strong hook-filled melodies highlighted by the opener "More Than Local" and the manic "Louisiana Saturday Night" that finds a perplexed Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown playing a convincing lead guitar. Their sound is immensely commercial, and the scruffy-haired Abercrombie good looks of the band should only help in their quest for radio/video domination. Add some maturity to the songwriting and less of a regional bent to the lyrics, and the Benjy Davis Project will be moving away from the frat house and into the hands of a major record label.
