Lucia Lie is a talented band just oozing with potential. Rob Connolly’s talents are the central focus of their new album “I’ll Wake You in the Morning.” Connolly goes from relaxed to frantic all in one song. He has a good set of pipes, but when he pushes to hard, his emotionally drenched inflections sound off key. On the other hand, it could very well be the way it should sound in order to match the frenetic pace of the music. The outlook and atmosphere of the music finds a cello placed at various points within the songs to throw of the symmetry of the mood. The cello is a soothing yet eerie instrument that sets you up for something to happen much in the same way a suspenseful movie does, and if used properly it can heighten a powerfully built rock song to give the lyrics an impact that would be otherwise missing. “Nadi” paints a picture of beautiful noise, and it is probably the best example of their approach. They create a barrage of sound with guitars provided by Connolly and a rumbling rhythm section of Blaise Lanzetta (drums) and Stephen Yonkin (bass). Lorena Ruiz adds the cello to circumvent all of that energy abruptly, and then it all comes swooping down again. The band really shows all its strength and sheer power when they they cut loose with emotionally pure lyrics coupled with the music to fit the story they are telling. If you are like me and have a tendency to lean towards hard rocking music filled with emotion and boundless energy this CD will turn on that internal switch as if it were hard wired to your soul.
