Artist History
THE STORY:
When twenty-five-year-old Portland piano-pop troubadour Scott Fisher debuted his five-song EP last November, critics (regional and national) responded with superlatives
Since Fisher's debut he has refined his chops playing venues like Dantes, The Cobalt, The Fez and events like The Bite of Portland, Edgefield's Oktoberfest, The Portland Streetcar Dedication and Burnside Distribution's MusicFest NW Industry Party.
Fisher takes a love for old school '70s funk/soul/groove (Shuggie Otis, Herbie Hancock, Curtis Mayfield) and marries it to contemporary pop (Coldplay, Travis, Dave Matthews). Add impressive songwriter chops (with comparisons to John Lennon, David Grey and Elliot Smith), deep delectable vocals, classically trained piano mastery, electronica-inspired production, and a seasoned band that includes bassist Matt Voth(Flatirons, Mad Hattie), drummer Jeff Anthony (Jeff Trott, Pepe & the Bottle Blondes) and guitarist Bob Dunham (Belizbaha). The result is a sound that's ready for the airwaves and a live presentation that rivets listeners.
HISTORY:
Fisher began piano lessons at the age of six, studying with Ilsa Glassel, an exiled German concert pianist. By age 14 he and Tye North (of Leftover Salmon) started a band and released a 5 song cassette. After graduation Fisher attended Boston University and immediately formed Liquid Sunrise, a jam-oriented touring act that soon became a staple of the Northeast club/college circuit. Soular, Fisher's next project, was influenced by 70's Miles Davis improv and Frank Zappa's intricate compositions. In 1998 Fisher moved Soular to Portland where it quickly became an underground success, selling over 2000 units of their first release before disbanding.
In 2000 Fisher co-produced a five-song EP with Dan Decker (Dandy Warhols, Eric Matthews). Marrying jazzy instrumentation with a more contemporary soundscape, Fisher anchored the selections with his nuanced, full-timbre vocals and proficient keyboard work (piano, Wurlitzer, Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, etc). Decker's Steely Dan influences paired with Fisher's contemporary Beck-meets-Radiohead leanings, resulted in an accomplished, ear-catching recording, concluding with a catchy French re-mix of "Everpresent Now,"taking advantage of Fisher's bilingual upbringing (Fisher's mother is French and he spent part of his childhood in Bordeaux and Paris).
