Artist description
Vicki Guzmán has been blazing trails ever since she hit the
Madison, WI scene back in 1994. After an opening spot
with Ani di Franco in April `95, Vicki's presence
has been felt at local benefits and at coffeehouses
throughout the Midwest. Her bare and compelling
solo style stands out on its own. Blend it with her band's
diverse arrangements and refined back-up
this music becomes dangerous to the status quo.
Whether singing on a picket line for fair wages or
bellowing chants on a march to the Capitol, Vicki contributes
her uncompromising spirit to local causes. She has done benefits
for Madison Area Peace Coalition, WI Green Party,
WORT (community radio), Domestic Abuse Intervention Services,
Milwaukee NOW and the "Remembering Omran" tour. Vicki integrates
older labor songs with newer originals, singing
“We will be free! Someday.”
Her provocative songs pay respect to Indian music and
political folk, with influences as varied as L. Shankar,
Richie Havens, John McLaughlin, Nina Simone, and Anne Feeney.
This socially uplifting musician will reach out and grab your attention.
Because of her introspective lyrics and the occasional barb at the white man,
John Noyd of Maximum Ink says she
“leaves everyone feeling better for having heard an alternative point of view.” |
