Artist description
Parallex is a refreshing blend of of hard rock songs with a solid edge, yet we still show our prominent soft side through the form of ballads.
Our sound is quite reminiscent of the rock sound heard in the early 90's, the period we believe
modern rock was at its best. The music of Parallex is rich and full, utilizing the richness of
harmonizing guitars, string back grounds, melodic basslines and guitar solos, percussion with a
moving edge, and soothing vocals. The music of Parallex answers to a wide variety of audiences,
and has been appealing to both young and old alike.

Artist History
Parallex was formed in January 2002, as a mission by Josh Lizer to create
a sound that was a contrast to the redundant punk heard in many college towns.
It took him about six months to complete the line-up. David was discovered while
Josh was in the basement of the Music Hall at Iowa State University practicing. Josh heard a drummer practicing on the set
in the drum practice room and went to check it out. Josh was amazed by Dave's talent on the drum set and similarity in musical taste,
and Dave was immediately recruited as the second member of the band. Josh then sought Corwin Colebrooke, one he knew of as a valuable resource
in the Ames local music scene. Corwin was a guitar player-turned-bass player, but Corwin's knowledge of music technology, ownership of equipment, and the many musical
connections he possessed made him a smart choice to bring in to the band. Tom later contacted Josh, expressing interest in the "Guitarist Wanted" adds that Josh put out.
Tom came over and jammed with Josh, and it didn't take Josh long to realize that Tom's contrasting musical tastes, yet similar in the same way, creative guitar techniqes, ability to learn a song fast, willingness to be in the band, and colorful personality
made for a clear choice for Josh's wingman and partner in destruction. Later, almost like it was meant to be, John contacted Josh one day, saying he had heard from a source we were seeking a singer. He sang for Josh, and his voice was perfect for the Parallex sound.
Not only does John's hard work ethic make him a valuable asset to the band, but he is constantly striving for improvement in his vocal performance, such a key factor in the sound of a band. John is never satisfied with the way he sounds. He also played guitar, which would be useful
when the use for a third live guitar was needed. However, John's biggest attribute to shaping the sound and style of the band is his gift to create amazing melodies full of color, and lyrics teeming with originality, creativity, and emotion.
Once the line-up was complete, the newly-formed Parallex held their first practices in the den of a college dormitory.
They worked hard, promoted hard, and their first performance in Ames, at an open mic performance of a local venue, brought record numbers
for an open mic night at the Boheme. The owner expressed to the band they have never had an open mic night so busy in the history of the Boheme.
He then scheduled Parallex for their own show at the Boheme three days later.
Everything from there has only been downhill for Parallex. Today, they are busy playing shows and adding to their fan base.
They also experienced a line-up change in September, when Tom announced he was leaving the band. Several guitarists were auditioned
to fill the void, but one person clearly rose above the rest
as the best player to fill Tom's opening. When guitarist Mike Collins
joined the band he brought a wind of change. Mike is a musician, to say the least.
His technical abilities on the guitar result in power solos, fast sweeps, and any other
maneuver that requires speed. Parallex became a new band after Mike joined. The music
was taken to a higher level and the sound became tighter. Mike is a metal player but amazingly
enough, his talent allows him to leave the metal "groove" and adds his touch--the perfect touch--to
the songs. If you want a metal solo, he'll play you a metal solo. If you want a melodic pop solo, he'll
deliver to you a melodic pop solo. He's got it all. |
