Artist History Rickie wrote her first song when she was only fourteen, when auditioning for a televised talent showcase. She remembers being the youngest performer there, and the only one singing cover songs. With lyrics that she wrote in middle school about having a secret crush and a homemade track that she played on keyboard and recorded on cassette, Rickie intended for the song to be especially for the show. Little did she know that it would open up her musical career.Since then, she has performed in numerous other showcases in New York City and coffeehouses in New Jersey. And needless to say, her writing has matured. She dedicated an entire year to working on her debut album Underwellmed with her producer. Underwellmed has a variety of influences, from electronica to acoustic singer-songwriter alternative rock, and even some hip-hop. What brings all these sounds together are her beautiful melodies, the hint of cynicism in her lyrics, and of course, her voice. Now, Rickie is seventeen years old, and an incoming composition major at the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase. She has written some new songs since Underwellmed, all of them being piano-accompanied. She is a popular singer at Cool Beans, a café where she performs on weekends. “For me, there is no greater satisfaction than getting positive feedback from other teenagers,” she admits. Before the album even came out, “A girl in school comes up to me and tells me she heard my song and that it’s good...I don’t even know how she got a hold of it. I guess people pass it around. That’s pretty cool.” Unlike other vocalists, Rickie does a lot more than just sing. She thinks of herself as a one-woman show. As the hostess of one venue where she performed even said “I like to think of her as a triple threat. She sings, plays piano, and writes her own songs”. She took up piano lessons just so that she could play her own music. She learned how to build a website just so that she could do hers. She’s even put together one of her own shows. What’s next? Right now, Rickie is studying recording and plans to record an album herself.
