Artist History
Luke Janela was born in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado City, CO, somewhere between the Atlantic and Pacific of America. He grew up and nourished his intense affinity for music in Ukiah, Northern California, closer to the west, to the edge, of America. Luke began playing the cello and the guitar at the age of 12 following the lead of his violin playing brother and the encouragement of his parents. He also had a crush on a cellist who invited him to join the orchestra. Such is fate.
Luke’s musical push developed to extreme proportions in Santa Cruz, CA, where, as he earned a BA in music theory and history, he began to play and record his music to an ever increasing audience of dedicated supporters.
In Spring of 2001, Luke moved to Portland, OR upon completing a long winter and his fourth full length release: ‘talk into the stars’. Since moving there, he has hustled earnestly compiling a sturdy and growing group of dedicated fans, supporters and co collaborators. In 6 months in Portland, Luke finished his most astounding work to date: ‘you space me’, and has been a featured performer at Portland’s most important rock, electronic and folk venues.
Luke continues to create Quality in music, the underlying factor in every song he plays. Thoughtful, provocative, impassioned, and unique are defining words. Performances don’t just happen, they occupy a period of intensity and feeling within entire rooms full of captivated audiences: upon the completion of a performance, no one is unaffected, and few are able to remain uninspired.
Luke is working independently now, establishing within Portland a necessary community of songwriters who break boundaries, and affect people’s lives directly. He works with several venues and the NewFolKollective, a group of songwriters who reflect this ideal of community and importance in music’s current storytellers.

Press Reviews
"Luke Janela is a dear, quietly strumming his guitar and singing with a melting gumption, or bowing his cello so vibrantly, and with such spot-on intonation, you'll be swooning by the end of his set." -Portland Mercury |
