Artist History
Leonardo De Angelis is internationally recognized as one of the most interesting guitarists of the last generation. Born in Rome in 1962, of a family of musicians, he began his music studies very early, getting his degree with honor. "cum laude." Formed by the teaching of his father, Claudio, he developed a broad repertoire, always paying attention to tradition but heeding the experimental as well, refined to the personal style of his instrumental techniques. He pursued his search for perfection from Geneva to Madrid, ending with Andrés Segovia, who described him in a written statement as "a musical temperament always in accord with the maximum exigency of the art". Final winner of the International Guitar Competition "Città di Alessandria" in 1981, Leonardo De Angelis has pursued his career internationally, playing in the most important concert halls of the capitals of Europe: Madrid's Ateneo, RTF of Paris, Mozarteum of Innsbruck & Vienna, Sala Verdi of Milano, Maria Callas of Atene, London's Malthouse, and the Teatro Argentina of Rome. Regularly invited to international Festivals at Havana, Amsterdam, Bratislava, Mexico, and Puerto Rico he has always met with great acclaim from the public. The critics have always agreed on his innovative programs, and his originality of execution: "He expresses his deep musicality with striking force, without losing grace and elegance" (Classical Guitar); "A fine and precious artist, sure of his art" (Les cahiers de la Guitare). Leonardo De Angelis has played a number of premieres for RAI, Radio France & the BBC. Since his meeting with Leo Brouwer in 1986, he has performed: three national premieres of his works (Concert no. 2, "Liegi"; no. 3, "Elegiaco"; no. 4, "Toronto"); the integral recording of the Studi, with relative revision; the world's first recording of Concerto no. 4 "Toronto"; the world's first recording of Concerto "Cantata". Leonardo De Angelis presently teaches music at the School of Music "Morlacchi" in Perugia (Italy), and has been asked to give master classes in academies such as the Polytechnic of Lancashire and the Ingesund Akademie. He also teaches a class of Music Methodology at the University of Rome "RomaTre", and has been consultant and promoter of the festival programs in Assisi, Rieti, Pistoia, Sermoneta, and Artistic Director of the seasonal "Guitar Itinerary" at the Teatro dell'Angelo in Rome. |
