Press Reviews
Article by free lance Indie scene journalist Colin P.:
Hey Maleequa, this is Colin.
Had a great time at the show on Saturday, and Ive been listening to 2,747.2 ever since. Thought Id tell you what I really thought about it since, as a fellow artist, I know how well it validates yer shite.
After listening to 2,747.2 a few times I thought about all three of your CDs chronologically, and how they had changed. I think that your songwriting abilities are expanding and moving foreward, and I can tell what you're getting at.
Little things in the album, like the weird drums in "So You Called", and the end of "For My Mom" (especially when positioned against the cool beginning of "Heather's Death March") show this.
There are also more extreme departures. Ive got to say- "Nostalgia" is my favourite song on the album. I dont think Ive heard you play it live though. I would hate to see you sweep this song under the rug because it's different and you may regard it as more of a novelty. That song rocks hard, and I think it would bring down the house live. Work it out with the boys, I beg you.
One observation that I have about the direction that youre going: The new stuff has much more character. Youre doing increadibly well at finding your own sound- you get better every album (you know haw I feel about being different from everyone else and standing out from the masses with your own voice). But the new stuff sometimes runs the risk of being less exciting live than the older stuff. (Compare "Alien" or "Wasted" with the majority of songs on 2,747.2) I DO NOT think that this is a bad thing. I like it more that youre breaking out of the straight "punk" mold (not that you ever COMPLETELY fit in there anyway). And also, some of the songs off the new one, like "Stacy" (my second favourite) or "I Still Miss Someone", are still gonna light fires. So it's definatly not a bad thing, but you should be aware of it.
Dylan's really good! He messed up a few times, but did amazingly well for only having practiced the songs for the last few weeks (!) He seemed to play some of the older songs slower tho.
Those are just a few quick thoughts ive had about it in the whole day Ive been listening to it (nonstop). Good work Justin, Im happy to know such a good artist (coming from someone who knows how hard it really is- I never stop being amazed at how tight your band is).
