Artist History Patrick Hanifin grew up in Newport Beach, California. A surfer for many years, he owned the largest surf shop in California, until one day, he sold his business and started writing poetry and short stories. Patrick explains, "I'm always jumping into new things, so selling my business and jumping into writing was nothing for me. I tried to create poetry that would be fun to read and not over people's heads. The Jerk was one of my first characters and I'm very fond of him. People are always asking me if that really happened. My answer is, "maybe." "Now, I'm involved with the guitar, creating my own songs, more characters, doing exactly what I want to do. I couldn't be happier. One day I may even open my own theme park. I mean, if Walt Disney could start with a mouse, I can start with a jerk!"
