Artist History
“When I say world, you say spin”. These are the words of Timothy Dark aka the Dark Warrior, and his partner- in- rhyme, Jules Smuggles, as they perform Worldspin, one the songs from Dark’s album, Dark Warrior. This song, like all the songs on the album, is deep, conscience, spiritual and sometimes frightening. The Warrior attacks everything from police brutality, to drug addicts left for dead, to the 9.11 tragedy, to life in the Rotten Apple, to our constant use of the word why. “People are sleeping, somebody gotta wake em up”.
Timothy Dark was born in the 1970’s, and had a dual upbringing. Living with his parents in East Elmhust, Queens on weekends and living in the South Bronx during the week. He soon developed a love for the culture of the Bronx, which he affectionately calls “the Boogie” and started to hang with the local crews around Melrose Ave. Break dancing, graffiti, gang fights, drug dealing, it was all there, it was all inspiration. But one thing appealed to him more than any of these things, and that was music. Melle Mel, The Fat Boys, Salt and Pepa, Run. D MC, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Michael Jackson, they all amazed and inspired him. As time when on, he developed his own skills as a rapper and went through rap group after rap group, never seeming satisfied. In 2002 after the breakup of his last group, Fallen Angelz, he began work on his latest album Dark Warrior.
Using the blazing acoustic guitar and vocals of producer Zay from Speed of Life, the heart pounding Latin pop sounds of Julio Acosta, the uninhibited raw sounds of 15 year old Renny, the sweet, hypnotizing voice of Jenny Teague, and his own style of revolutionary, “we could die tonight” style of rap, he brought his creation to life.
Dark performs frequently at the Lower East Sides underground open mikes, The Sidewalk Caf and the Ravens Lounge, run by anitfolk legend and creator Lach, and green haired icon Joie Dead Blond Girlfriend.
Dark attacks stages like a man possessed, painting tales of the struggles of God’s children, to survive this thing called life. His last show featuring Zay, Lady Nicole, Julio Acosta, Alvarez, and Jules Smuggles made the new artist section of www.music2g.com magazine, an up and coming online publication.
