Artist History
The band was born in 1996 by lead guitarists/vocalist, Dawn Lozefski, and drummer, Deb Piccolo. Dawn, whose influences include the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Patti LaBelle, continues to study in the jazz/R&B realm. Deb's credits include four years with a Hartford-based alternative rock band "The Reign" and maintains a strong influence in R&B drumming. Formerly of "Nzinga's Daughters", the two have rejoined in musical partnership to focus on original pieces.
Fate and patience brought Deborah Simmons into the group. An accomplished guitarist/pianist and the Director of Music at Manchester Community College, Deborah enjoyed "Swivel Hips" diverse sound and took on the challenging role of the band's bassist. Deborah now weaves her sound between keyboards and acoustic bass.
"Swivel Hips" boasts an energetic, funky, and all-together cool saxophonist, Lori Edwards. With her diversified rock/folk influences and many years in the Hartford-based band "Echo Janes", Lori brings along a multitude of talents, including singing, songwriting, and rhythm guitar.
Our most recent addition to the band is Laurie Punch, on bass/percussion. Laurie's been groovin' in our audience for the past couple of years and easily made the transition into the bass role, offering up a driving funk sound. She's also into tribal hand drums and doubles as our "percussive right hand".
