Artist description When you think of the "Minneapolis Music Sound" in the past 20 years, the names Hüsker Dü, Replacements, Soul Asylum, Prince and now Semisonic come to mind. WITH. is none of these. Now reaching somewhere close to their fifth birthday, WITH., is an alt-metal wet dream. With the influx of misogynist, rap-rock outfits flooding the peripheral and mainstream music charts, you'd think WITH. would be yet another addition to the over inflated top of the heap. But they are not that either. WITH. is rock-n-roll. Pure and simple. Metal with melody. A fuck you with a smile. The Minneapolis five piece contains Brian Larson on vocals along with new recruit Alexis Bassett who hailes from the fertile rock grounds of Kanawa, Iowa (who, I've been told, can blow a mean Tuba – sans mouthpiece); Jack Gilbert on guitar, Jason Moberg on bass and Brad Daninger on drums. Their heavenly racket sounds more like Fuel than Limp Bizkit, Deftones than Korn. Those silly boy bands are so 1998... Anyway, what you see is what you get. Good old fashioned, straight ahead, ass-kickin' rock. So what makes them so different you might say? Just check out the music; "Crooked Line" takes you back to the left-of-center harmonies of John Doe and Exene Cervenka's X – always complicated, yet still incredibly beautiful. The song "Shine Stain", with it's hefty and catchy guitar riff and belching bassline, will catch your attention, if nothing but for the seering vocals of Alexis – giving back up singer a whole new definition. This is also Brian at his aggro best. The songs are produced by local legend Dave Pinsky (Soul Asylum, Beastie Boys, et al.) who has overseen many a track for WITH. It's another guitar-lathered, manic percussion piece of alt-metal genius. The pteradactyl sounds of Jason on backing vocals would make Marilyn Manson run for his cozy condo back in Florida. So after a bittersweet gulp of WITH. you may walk away shaking your head, but it's only the ringing in your ears. Viva la metal!
