    Artist History
Tight vocal harmonies, contemporary arrangements, and high energy performances have captivated audiences from Montreal to Vancouver Island as The Buccaneers win Canada over with their unique brand of aggressive Canadian folk music. The summer of 1997 was a turning point in the lives of four young Calgary men, who set out to make music and live life in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Originating as a 6-piece busking group, The Buccaneers demonstrated 'a disarming chemistry' and 'a passion for performance', winning fans and accolades. Within 1˝ years, the group had streamlined to 4 members, pursuing a full-time touring schedule as an independent band. Their debut CD, Prairie Shanty, released in May 1999, saw airplay on radio across North America, and around the world. A mix of traditional and original songs, this recording met with overwhelming fan response, from all ages and all walks of life. Released online in Jan 2000, it dominated the World/Folk, Celtic and Folk genres at MP3.com for months at a time, and achieved a #12 ranking for 'Whiskey in the Jar', sandwiched in the charts between two of Madonna's songs! With their inclusion on MP3.com's spring 2001 promo disc, The Buccaneers' MP3.com listeners number nearly half a million from around the world! To support their first release, the four lived on the road for 2˝ years, playing pubs, clubs, festivals, corporate events and private functions. With an eclectic, bilingual, free-spirited show, they nurtured a fan base across six provinces and wowed the media wherever they could get their foot in the door. They have shared the stage with performers such as The Waltons, Painting Daisies and The Fables, and even entertained Catherine O'Hara, and Brian Tobin, then the Premier of Newfoundland. In October 2000, the band dropped anchor in Calgary, weary from the road and intent on winning over a hometown crowd. Now, gaining ever-greater recognition in the public eye and music community alike, The Buccaneers focus their efforts on new original material, preparing a second studio project. Performance credits include: International Freedom Festival, Pan-Am Games, Western Canadian Summer Games, Maritime Reunion Association, Liberal Party of Newfoundland/Labrador, Various Hollywood Wrap Parties, Canmore Highland Games, Festival de Voyageur
